Walking Cross Country

Okay Pit, so... Once I finish school, I'm headed to California (coming from Ohio). Thought about driving for an awesome road trip, but I had a better idea. "Let's make it a pilgrimage" I say, and started thinking about the possibility of walking all the way there.

Some rudimentary math broke it down to about 184 days of straight walking (16 hours walking, 8 sleeping), so I'm going to guess about 200-215 days with resting, eating, sight seeing, etc. I'll be bringing a back pack with a few outfits, a nice sleeping bag (or small tent), a sum of money for food and water and a hotel (in case it starts raining buckets) a knife/gun for protection in case, CD player and a shit ton of batteries, and all the other important shit I guess. I thought a lot of it out, but don't feel like typing a book longer than the one I have.

So my question is Pit, is there anything I'm overlooking or things that I should know of? I'm mostly concerned about carrying the gun due to firearm laws, but I suppose I can make due with a knife. I really like this idea and want to do it, but what else should I consider about doing this?

tl;dr - for the lazy and the whiners; walking from Ohio to Cali, what to prepare/expect for?
Thanks all

I'm in a pretty good shape. Bit on the slim side, but good shape none the less. I do about 1.5-2 miles of walking at work each day.

You might have to run a test beforehand to find out what exactly 16 hours of walking means. I'm not trying to discourage you, but that's a ****ton of walking, and assuming you're capable of it, you will be in more pain than you can imagine.

It's going to take much longer than that. Did you consider at all the terrain? Do you know how many mountain ranges and deserts there are between you and California?

edit: I don't know, maybe you're a champion walker. Good luck.

Good looking out. It won't be 16 hours of straight walking, every day the whole time; there will be rest periods, but thank you for pointing that out.

Somewhat. I know it will take longer, yes. Mountains increase mileage. However, I'm on western Ohio and won't really have a lot of mountains to traverse til I get passed the desert anyways. Desert doesn't add mileage but sand, so the slow down wouldn't be too considerable. The only thing that would slow me down there would be more frequent breaks to avoid heat exhaustion.

I'll give you couple of hours before you give up. On the other hand, it'll be just like pokemon.

You know how hard it is to carry that stuff on your back and how hard it is to cross a desert while doing it?

If only I could catch wild animals to make the venture...

When the time comes for this to happen (still have 2.5 years of school and money savin' to do), I'll post another thread and take pictures and we'll see how it goes. I'm gonna bring an address book to write people, as well.

Combined total weight wouldn't be more than 20 pounds, and I'm pretty fit. I've hiked through the desert before. Moderation and patience is key for desert hiking.

If you're sleeping outside, you'd need a tent since the environment can be harsh.
Where are you getting food? Will this be finished by winter?

If you would've read the first post instead of whining about the tl;dr you would've seen that even if I don't make the walk I'll still be driving.

If you're going to be counter productive and just bring negativity to the thread, you don't have to post.

I'll be starting early spring to avoid hiking through winter. Food will be purchased as I drift along. I'll swing through stores and grab healthy/high energy foods. I haven't looked into it yet, but I'll try and plan out the healthiest diet possible for the trek.
