I was sorta drawn away by the Power Block for a couple of reasons.
-They aren't being made anymore, so I'd have to find one used (not that big of a deal).
-Stories where they've stopped working/malfunctioned on people multiple times.
-Not in a convenient format, like the 44 is, defeats the purpose of just adding it to a pedalboard or something.

I'd just buy a head if anyone could recommend a head with a good amount of clean headroom, can take pedals well, and would work well with a 1x12 (for now).

Hmm, well yeah Let's say $500 including the cab. But I'd like to hear suggestions over that limit that as well for down the line. I wouldn't mind spending extra if it was worth it for sure. I've always liked Orange but I couldn't afford it

My plan was to buy a cheapish amp setup, and then buildup a really nice pedalboard, then upgrade the amp.

Oh man, with $500 you can get a solid combo amp. Any reason you want a head+cab vs. a combo? It's not really worth getting a 1x12 cab if you have $500 to spend on a nice combo!

No real reason haha, as long as it's lightweight. I jumped to a head+cab after seeing the 44. But I am open to anything!

Budget? - $500 for now. Feel free to recommend stuff in the long run.

Genres? - I do play a lot, especially rock though. Grunge, alternative, 90's stuff, ska punk, etc. I don't really play metal, or classic rock too much. Occasionally, I'll play jazz. Definitely needs good cleans.

New or Used? - Either way is fine, but I prefer new. I don't want to deal with the hassle of talking to other people on craigslist, Ebay, and all that. I know that sounds ridiculous.

Home or Gig? - Practicing at home, and playing with a drummer when needed eventually.

Closest City? - Richmond, VA

Current Gear? - Gibson SG special, and Marshall MG/Roland Micro Cube. When I play with others, it's only acoustic :/

The Richmond, VA Guitar Center just got an EHX .44 Magnum in. They're selling it second hand for $80. They also have a Crate Power Block for $100. They also have A TON OF OTHER STUFF.

I can't seriously go through all of it right now, but it looks like the Richmond GC has a wide selection of second hand amps. What are some bands' tones that you would love to emulate. Name your top 3.

Hmm, well I like that dark, deep clean tones like Heart Shaped Box, or from 1979. At the same time, maybe something like RHCP. As far as distortion goes, something thick for rhythm, but clear for solos: Say it Ain't So, or Everlong. Maybe with a higher gain potential. But those are more of where I want to start but yeah.

I was originally going to invest in a nice distortion pedal like a Yeti by Tortuga Effects, or VFE. Another important thing is lightweight, I need to be able to manage it, so I was leaning towards a 1x12.

Define lightweight...a good combo might be like 60 lbs. You could always use a dolly or a hand cart to move it around.

Pretty sure Heart Shaped Box and 1979 were both recorded with Fenders, but don't quote me on that. They also used chorus pedals to add that depth. Say it ain't so was a Big Muff and Everlong could have been either a Mesa Road King or an AC30 driven with a pedal. I forget...that might have also been some studio magic.

Honestly, I would look for a Fender to use as a pedal platform.
