Why should I use a concave bottleneck?
I'm getting a bottleneck (my first one) and I noticed Jim Dunlop sells Concave bottlenecks (i.e. a bottle neck that's thinner in the middle than the edges). Why is this? Should I get it? I've never used a slide before, can you help me here?

I would think to accommodate some of the less flat fretboard radiuses.

i might recommend getting a glass and a metal slide for two reasons:
each provide different tones, and they aren't that expensive, also glass one break really easy, so if you have pets/siblings/children, then metal is (i've found) to be a more viable option. just some advice since you said it's your first. |

A straight glass slide is the easiest way to learn. Once you're proficient with that then try steel, brass and oddball profiles until you work out what you prefer. A toddler doesn't need Reebocks.

Yeah, man. It's been friggin boiling. Been hovering just under 40C for days. I've been sleeping through most of the day with the air con on.
But back on topic. TS, make sure you get one that fits properly. You want it small enough that it doesn't flop around but not so small that you can't just flick it off. The Jim Dunlop glass slides are quite good. I've had mine for maybe 20 years and dropped it heaps. Still going strong. I actually use a steel one now though.

TS - In simplest terms; because some fretboards are convex.

Oh you Australians, its -25c up in my part of Quebec right now. Also on a more relevant note if you've never played slide before be patient I found it very difficult at first and still kinda do. If your buying your first slide I'd just get a regular old brass slide. I've had a Dunlop one for years.

I found brass ones to be too heavy to learn with. Glass is easier when starting out.

He should probably just buy both to find which one he likes. Slides , like strings, can be a personal thing.Plus slides are only like 5-10$.
