Why aren't there MIDI guitars?

Just a guitar that hooks up to your computer and has the feature of being able to interpret and send each frequency that is produced by your strings, especially bending/sliding/chords etc. It would be awesome. I didn't actually look up if it's a thing already but I don't want to find out that I'm not the first to have this idea.

If I had too much money I'd totally get a guitar with a MIDI pickup and one of those Roland/Boss midi guitar effects processor things

I used to have one. It was the Yamaha EZ-AG
It was a fun little toy.
I used it as a bass in this video:

And as a piano in this one:

It had 20 different built in sounds, or you could MIDI link it to a host program like FL Studio

pretty sure Roland makes an attachment for normal guitars to interpret each string as separate midi info.

I believe Jerry Garcia used a midi guitar live back in the late 80's or maybe early 90's. I am not sure when exactly but the Grateful Dead was VERY open to experimenting with new technology. I may be talking out of my ass, but I seem to recall hearing that they actually contributed a lot to the growth of technology usage in live music.

Basically though, yes. MIDI guitars have existed for a while, they aren't super common though. I can't think of a single person I know that plays music and owns one... or has even played one.

There are also midi interfaces you can play a regular guitar into, but they're all monophonic.

Well, the technology is kinda simple: you need something to decode the signal, convert it into a digital format and then feed it into your computer.

...so I'm pretty sure it exists.

EDIT: Apparently it does, although these seems more like guitar shaped digital controllers rather than tuned guitars which produce analogue signals (induced current from magnetic field around pickup coils caused by the vibration of the strings, if I'm not mistaken).

An old friend of mine owned an ESP he stuck Roland's MIDI pickup onto aftermarket, it was a really cool gadget. Problem though is it's over $200 for the pickup, and almost $800 for the floor unit if you ever want to use it live.

Godin [url] and Brian Moore make a bunch where the midi pickup and controls are integrated into the guitars (some of the latter have USB built in as well); Fender also makes a "Roland Ready" Strat that works this way.
