drum solos with accompaniment

say you have a rhythm section comprising of guitar, bass and drums. can you put a drum solo over it (just like a guitar) without making it sound like a complete mess? please give me examples of songs that have done that.

Ask again in Musician Talk. This is for music that's already been released.
If you're reading this, it means UG still has this, but not a :sam: smiley.

I'm thinking you mean something like this, right?

The part I'm talking about starts at 1:06

Not really metal anymore but Swedish prog band Pain Of Salvation ends their song "No Way" from Road Salt One with a drum solo that has the band playing over it.

Also, Between The Buried And Me's "Swim To The Moon" kind of has that with a drum solo with short bursts from the rest of the band all over it.
