drum solos with accompaniment
say you have a rhythm section comprising of guitar, bass and drums. can you put a drum solo over it (just like a guitar) without making it sound like a complete mess? please give me examples of songs that have done that.

Not really metal anymore but Swedish prog band Pain Of Salvation ends their song "No Way" from Road Salt One with a drum solo that has the band playing over it.
Also, Between The Buried And Me's "Swim To The Moon" kind of has that with a drum solo with short bursts from the rest of the band all over it.
