If they don't care, they're not going to act either way, so it's not like they're making anything worse by offering their condolences. They never were going to act in the first place, it's not an "If they don't pray they act" or "If they pray they don't act" or something. It causes no harm, and it could raise someone's spirits, so it can help.

Again, if it really bugs you that much, you have bigger problems than people offering insincere words.

If I say "I'm thinking about you", then I mean it. I normally don't just think about people.

By saying that, I hope to convey a feeling that the person is not alone, which is so often needed during times of adversity. It also provides me a chance to reflect on my own situation.

I get more pissed when people use dumb excuses to get peoples sympathy. The part of the equation you are taklin about is people fallin into what they feel is expected of them to retain some form of humanity and fit in or either they may actually care about the situation at hand.

Depends. If they think that because they've prayed about a cause that they're entitled to some credit for the effort to help then yeah, but I've never met someone who's done that. Nothing wrong with showing unity through prayer and sympathy
