Which Cabinet?
I might buy a Marshall DSL15H Head but I don't know what cabinet I should get with it. I don't want something too loud and if possible I'm going to install Celestion Vintage 30's. I don't want to spend too much on the cabinet because the head is $500 and I have to ship it to South Africa, which costs a lot.

Those speakers are rated at 100 db sensitivity. If volume is a huge concern, a less efficient speaker would be better unless you simply must have that particular speaker's sound.

If I were you, I would try to get a Marshall 1936 cab loaded with Celestion G12T-75's. V30's tend to make Marshalls sound a little fizzy, and the newer DSL's are a bit fizzy anyway, so I would avoid V30's. Most Marshall players use T75's anyway. In addition, it's rated at 97db instead of 100, so it'll be quieter.
If you really want it quiet, you could get an Eminence Maverick, which can attenuate down to 91.5db Really, a 1x12 would be the way to go for you, the only reason I recommended the Marshall 1936 is because they are cheap, easy to find, and already have a good speaker.

i'd say g12t75s are fizzier than v30s but i agree that if you don't want loud, v30s aren't the way to go.

I think that Marshalls always sound fizzier with V30's. In fact, I didn't like V30s when I first tried them because I thought they were fizzy even with my Vengeance, which I had tried in stores with it's matching cab that's loaded with T-75s. I think it's that upper mid spike that can make it sound fizzy paired with the way the highs can be ice-picky.

Orange 1x12 is outstanding, and it's already loaded with a vintage 30! Otherwise, my current favorite cab is the Port City 1x12 OS, it sounds HUGE at any volume and it's very affordable unloaded. I play it in my bedroom and at gigs, and it sounds good everywhere!

See if there's anyone near you who builds custom cabinets - it might end up being cheaper than shipping to your country, and you'll get great quality. I'm not really up on the South African music scene though, to be honest.
I'd go for a 1x12 with an Eminence Reignmaker if reasonable volumes are important. It's a bit more expensive than other speakers, but it sounds great and has a built-in attenuator. Awesome bit of kit. Last edited by kyle62 : 12-12-2012 at 08:04 AM. |

maybe I've never really tried marshalls with them (though i have a laney gh which is more or less a hot-rodded 800, and an 18 watt clone... granted i don't usually play them much with v30s ).

I suggested the Maverick because it actually goes quieter than the Reignmaker, but either would certainly work. Quote:
I really just don't like Marshalls and V30's generally. In a thread a while back, I posted all of the Marshall users I think of when I think Marshall, and probably 90% used T75's, and the other 10% was a mixed bag. There were only maybe two V30 users, one G12k-100 user, and then a few EVM. That was all.

if anybody could answer this id greatly appreciate it, but im a bit concerned on my 1960 cab. i bought it off craigslist and gave it a try with my 333xl head, but for some reason i wasnt hearing the "typical marshall" sound you get from the t75s. i unscrewed the back of the cab and checked myself to see if the t75s were in there, and i was suprised that they actually were there. im getting frustrated because im getting more of a v30 middy sound on the low end, rather than the vintage marshall scooped sound. i even swapped heads and used a line 6 spider iv head ( probably doesnt help considering its a solid state amp modeling head). i almost came to the conclusion that somehow this guy i bought the cab off of swapped the t75s out for another speaker, and disguised it to make it look like a t75. this would probably be possible if you can remove the metal plate off of the actuall speaker.

the Bugera 333/333xl are very mid heavy amps. I have the 333 and it is nothing but a backup now, it is just too bright for me to use all the time. I like it for Punk, but thats about all. And I use Eminence V12's with my amps.

thanks man, yeah i was defently thinking about upgrading to a 6505. and i defently see what youre saying about it being mid heavy, because if i try to turn it anylower than noon on the dial, it sounds muddy and the treble sound really scratchy. probably doesnt help knowing both the power and preamp tubes need replacement, which i havent done in over 2 years. |

That would probably help the tone, but it will still be a bright amp

ugh hopefully not too bright then... im more on the darker fatter sounds rather than the high attack brightness. i know it sounds odd considering i want the vintage scooped marshall sound from the t75, but too much brightness is like damaging to the ears. |
