Fill me in on Ampeg amps?
Hey UG,
I just finished guitar tracking with the group I'm in working on a new EP (straight to tape for the win!) Although I stuck with my twin mostly the other guitar player was using the engineer's old ampeg guitar amp. I've known about the ampeg amps being very cool and still much appreciated these days by amp lovers. Very unique sound. He was plugged into a VT22. Now the LAST thing I need to be doing is searching for more amps, but what are some ampeg amps to look for, what are some to avoid? I know you can buy GVTs still, and I'm familiar with the V4 being a very popular choice. Just looking for some insight on these amps. Thanks!

he did sound great, that amp was really awesome, i plugged into it for a bit and sent an OD through it, it ripped, I didn't do any tracking with it myself but it was a perfect choice for crunchy rhythm gtr.

while i haven't tried the new line they came out with over the past year or so i've owned a number of the reissue amps and played a lot of them as well as the old ones.
while known for bass amps and the SVT, ampeg made some great guitar amps. the reverberrocket was the first combo amp to have on board reverb, beating out fender by two years. i have a jet 112 combo and a 50 watt reverberrocket head right now. i know a guy who's reverberrocket was tossed about for miles in a tornado, it broke the "m" off "ampeg" and cause a slight bit of rust but otherwise worked just fine. how's that for durability? someone should write them about using stronger nameplates. |
