Hello, everyone,
I am tired of the speaker in my valveking amp and I am wanting a new one, I just can't stand that dark mushy distortion. I would really like my amp to sound more like metallica, especially the death magnetic sound. From the research I've done, the vintage 30, veteran 30, and eminence governor all appear to be good choices. Could anyone push me in the right direction as to what is best?

I would get either the Veteran 30 or Retro 30 from WGS (both V30 clones but one is a little brighter than the other) if your in the USA.

Would those give me better metallica distortion than the vintage and governor?

They are very simmilar. WGS was actually started by ex-Eminence employee's. and the WGS and the Eminence have smoothed out the hi-mid spike that many hate in the V30. besides it is hard for me to spend $150ish per speaker on something made in China when I can buy a USA made speaker for <$100. Kinda a no brainer

I could get it from a G12T-75 pretty well. I don't think that a V30 clone would be best for Metallica.

Old Metallica, and a lot of Thrash and Death Metal bands in the '80s, used Celestion G12-T75. Not sure about nowadays. But in case they still do, look for G12-T75 or its WGS equivalent HM75. Eminence Man-O-War should be based on that too but a lot of people say it sounds nothing like the Celestion original.

Thanks for everyone's input. I have done the fx loop, input dummy, and i have a bad monkey. However, it's still too mushy for my taste. If I want Metallica, should I stay away from the v30 clones? I know James used v30's for some of their albums.

people seem to like the VK amps with V30's or clones of V30's. So I think the WGS Veteran30/Retro 30 would be just fine.

So it seems like you're guiding me a little more towards the wgs than the governor? Is that correct?

I dont think he is guiding you to direction or other. Governor and Vet30 are all based on same speaker but with their own takes on it. Neither is "better". It depends on your taste, someone likes one better than the other and vice versa. And someone might hate them all and and go for T75. Or some other speaker. You are creating your own sound and every speaker has their own personality.

If you cant compare personally and youtube vids do not give you enough information, you have to take a shot in the dark and try it out yourself.

Alright, thank you! I'm almost to the point where I just want to flip a coin, you know? If the v30/v30 clone route is the way I should go for Metallica distortion (preferably death magnetic), then I guess I'll get the cheapest, which is the WGS.

and v30 clones would be the best for a "Death Magnetic" sound? I listened to the clip MaaZeus posted and the g12t nailed the "...and justice for all" sound, but the v30 seems to be closer to the new stuff Metallica does? Am I right, or do I need to be enlightened?

To get that "sound" you need a new amp. But by upgrading your stock speaker you will improve the tone of your amp. Which will make you sound better than you already do.

V30 and its clones are popular speaker in modern metal. It comes as stock speaker in quite a lot of different cabs too, like Mesa's. Even if it doesnt help you get closer Death Magnetic (which I have no idea how to get, horribly butchered mastering aside :p ) sound, I really doubt you'd be making a bad purchase there.

Dang, this is a tough decision. I think just for the sake of money I'll go with the wgs veteran sense it's kinda a shot in the dark with the youtube vids. Unless you guys think the retro is better for metallica?
