Recommended strings for playing 2 steps down
I was wondering what brand of strings people would recommend for playing in the tunings of C sharp (1 step and a half down) and 2 steps down. I play an electric Epiphone SG guitar.
The DDT (Drop Down Tuning) brand strings I am using now have way too much tension in them for both the C sharp and 2 steps down tunings. I feel like I am playing bass guitar, the tension is almost unplayable. The gauge of the strings as written on the box are: (DDT-12 12 - 16 - 20 - 38 - 52 - 60). The DDT strings also leave black soot marks all over the backs of my fingers on my picking hand too. In the past I have used Elixir and D'Addario strings and these worked well for playing in standard tuning and the tension was always very playable at that tuning with those brands. These two string brands also never left black marks all over my hands. Would the heavier gauges from those brands work well for the above mentioned tunings? Basically, I am looking for strings that stay in tune with good stability, have a moderate to low amount of tension when tuned to 1 step and a half down and 2 steps down, and don't leave sooty residue all over my fingers after playing (I know that last point sounds really trivial but I find it annoying). |

By 2 steps down do you mean C standard? I use Ernie ball "Not Even Slinky"s for drop B. C standard would be a little lower but I think those would work well. You may also want to try a set of 7 strings and skip the high e string. For example, this would make the ernie ball regular seven string set 13-56.

11's get a little spaghetti like tuned that low IMO. I still recommend 12 or 13s with a 56 or 58 low E.
