Looking for a power metal guitar (and some 70's/80's metal), any help?

Budget - I'm looking for under $2000, but I can maybe consider one for $3000

Favorite Artists -Luca Turilli, Timo Tolkki, Kai Hansen, Dave Murray, Adrian Smith, and Sam Totman mainly. I also play a lot of older stuff, like Dio, Ozzy, Sabbath, Metallica, but really like that bright power metal tone.

Preferences - I'd like 24 frets, but I'm not too picky. I think that body shapes with sharp edges (Explorer, Flying V, etc.) are cool but not too important. I really don't like the Telecaster or LP body shape though. I'd like a tremolo arm, and prefer locking over floating.

Pickups - H/H is good, I prefer passives, and I like some of the higher output DiMarzio's.

New or Used - Want new, but might consider used if it's really good.

Location - Near Washington D.C.

Current Gear - Peavey Vypyr, planning to get a 6505+ soon.

The only one I really have i mind is this one, http://www.fender.com/series/artist...y-stratocaster/ , but am not too sure on it.

Spend $2000 on an amp and $1000 on a guitar.

Spend the rest on a Splawn head, 4x12 cabinet, a noise gate, and some cables.

If you want EMGs, this may be decent:

Why settle for a 6505 when you could get so many amazing amps that would sound 10 times better?

I'd say ESP, Ibanez and Dean are the brands you should be looking at. Never understood metal players trying to make Fenders fit their style, it always seems like a peculiar choice to me. I mean a fat strat would do the work, but why not go for something more suitable to the genre. The necks really aren't built for speed, unless you're looking at the malmsteen model, then you've got the single coil issue, and lets face it, scalloped frets are an aquired taste.

For $2k US you will end up with something pretty great from any maker. I'd suggest you spend a good 2 months trawling guitar stores and playing the shit out of everything you can lay your hands on until you find something you love.

I don't really know what amps are good, I've heard clips of the 6505 and like the channel on my Vypyr. What amps IYO are really good?

High Gain amps aren't really my thing. I could make a couple solid suggestions, but if you want some opinions from guys who are really into the style of amp I think you'd like, make a thread here:

I don't listen to a lot of power metal, but Splawns are some of the best high-gain amps you can buy out there.

If you like the 6505+ plus, check out the 6534+; it's got EL34's in it for a more British-y crunch, I like them but they certainly aren't for everybody.
