So I've got the 6th edition real book, and upon finding different lists of jazz songs that I want to learn/should know I find that a lot of the songs aren't in the real book. How do I acquire all of the standards for these songs without just purchasing endless amounts of different real/fake books with those specific songs in them?

Here's another question then. Would I own virtually all of the jazz standards by owning all of the real books, or is there always going to be some standards that aren't in certain books? I'm just wondering how to go about collecting and jazz standard compilation, whether I should purchase fake books along with my real books, or can they all be real books.

Well, Real Books are fake books anyway, so you'd probably be fine with just Real Books.

I wouldn't necessarily just get all of the Real Books you can find. By all means, have a few different volumes or publications, but don't expect to find every jazz tune ever. I'm having a hard time understanding which standards you can't find. Maybe the tunes you're thinking of aren't necessarily standards, maybe they're fusion hits or pop tunes that have been made famous by jazz musicians.

I own "The New Real Book" published by Sher Music. It's a pretty good book. It lacks a lot of the standards that the Hal Leonard Real Book has, but it also has a lot of classic tunes that the Hal Leonard book doesn't. The lead sheets are actually more accurate on average than they are in the Real Books, and they are printed more clearly. Some of the tunes in the Real Books are written sort of haphazardly.

Not to rag on the Real Book though, it's a must-have for any jazz musician.

just transcribe it yourself, real books are inaccurate 99% of the time

I was surprised to find that the Hal Leonard book got Blue Bossa wrong several times. Blue Bossa. How do you get it wrong? It's the simplest standard ever. srs
