This is true. But really, like 75% of bands don't know how to make this happen. It's like they think the bass is just there for no reason.

Ew no.

Bass is there to be felt, not heard.

That's funny because it's the prevailing way in which bass is mixed

If that was true then why not just eq the low frequencies of the kick up by 20dbs? Huh? Or or, why not turn the bass all the way up on the guitar amp?

Firstly, because Kick drums resonate at one frequency. So wacking up the whole low end would cause booming, and wouldn't resonate in key with the song. Whereas having a bass that does follow key tightens up the low end.

Secondly, because a guitar can't produce frequencies low enough to fill out the low end.

Any other mixing questions?

uhm, I dunno what kind of music your listening to, but I can hear the bass in all my favorite bands.
Good for you. What's that got to do with prevailing mixing techniques?

At least Sam's clever enough to know something about music, realize I'm right but have a problem with it. That's a commendable position.

Have you ever properly mixed a song in your life? Just out of interest.

Leaving in the higher frequencies from the bass would make things so unnecessarily difficult for something nobody actually wants. So much snare sidechaining it'd be ridiculous.

Oh, so you're telling me about prevailing mixing techniques with no background in mixing.

You don't realize what a nightmare it'd be to produce something to industry standard and leave in the higher frequencies of the bass and leave in the pick attack (which no-one in their right mind wants to hear anyway).

It's funny because all of the top end is taken out of the bass as soon as it has to be mixed with the snare

EDIT: And then it's put straight back in around 1.20 when the drums drop out

EDIT2: Yep, and when the drums come back in around 1.50 it's taken out again.

What you seem to like is musical intros with toppy bass.

Well what do you mean by it?

I can hear the kick, but it's there to be felt. Same way I can hear the bass but it's mixed for the feeling rather than any definition.

Which is shit I know. What you said was so absolute that it made me chuckle like MJ. My counter argument was that if you want to feel the bass but not hear it then adjust frequencies other places.

No I have a few text books I will refer to but thank you for offering.

Again another absolute. I quite like the sound of the bass and when done right it adds so much more to a mix.

It's not crystal clear but I can make out when he's hitting the strings which is something a lot of bands are missing.

Again if you focus on the bass you can hear what I like to call the froggyness of it.

Cant argue with wanting to hear Dan Briggs.

Nobody's explained why though. Other than because they prefer it.
