Is 50 mb internet speed a waste?
I have comcast 50 mb down/10mb up (its actually faster on speedtest, reporting 65 mb down/ 11 up)
I play xbox live, and just surf the web. I mainly got this speed so that I know in my head that I am not "losing" any potential speed. Well I heard that its pointless to have speeds this fats because youtube and pretty much every website servers can only do 7-10 mb. Is this true? If so, than I don't see any point in paying what I am anymore if no websites allow me to take advantage of my speed. |

Not unless you do a lot of downloading. I have steam and I download gigs at a time, I also download whole discographies, and that sort of speed is worth it for me.

Don't really do download big files. Just stream 1080p netflix and youtube. IS it true that websites have limits on speeds or is that false? |

It's true that many websites will bottleneck your speed at lower than 50Mb/s, yes.

It is a bit. Steam etc. always go max up to 7mb/s here. It does allow you to download stuff and still surf the internet though. |

Are you talking megabit or megabyte? (Well actually Windows definition of megabyte is mebibyte and all that and... this thread is going to be confusing.)

If you're a gamer, the better your upload speed, the less lag you'll experience. Upload speeds are usually a tenth of your download speeds, so in that case, it makes sense to have a connection close to 100mbps.
If you're not a gamer, or downloader, it doesn't really matter. You'll benefit from 50mbps, but you will not notice it as strongly as with certain applications. Quote:
Steam always shows you the download speed in bytes, not bits. It's easier to understand, since filesizes are listed in bytes as well and that's what everyone is used to. Last edited by Lord_Doku : 01-26-2013 at 08:47 AM. |

Is this megabytes MB or megabits Mb? It really annoys me how ISPs always quote it in megabits to make it sound like it's more than it really is, when files are measured in bytes. It really deceives people who don't know the difference.
Holy shit that's fast, I'm lucky if I get over 10Mbps in my halls and I'm in central London ![]()

I currently have 58 Mbps, but that's because I am on wifi I guess. In Amsterdam I think that have laid glass fibre in front of my place a year ago. |

I think it's megabytes, or at least I don't know why any daily user would use the word megabit (except if they're informed so to get the sales better..).
I have 100 mbytes/s and i think the 80 of those are over my needs.. but I pay it half with my roommate so not a big deal. Used to have 90 kbytes/s download speed when still living at my parent's house, just imagine the 8GB WoW I downloaded. |

ISPs usually measure in Mb/s so that the numbers seem higher. Download clients usually measure in MB/s because it's easier to work out the length of time it takes to download a file measured in bytes. Your 100M*/s speed is almost certainly in megabits per second.

I had 50mb internet back in England at my parents' house, and now I have internet so slow that I can't even run a speedtest, but I'd guess at 50kb or so. I just go to work and use their 1gb connection if I need to download anything big though. At uni I had 2mb and it was slow enough to notice the difference when I went home. My parents have 120mbit now and my dad seems to notice a difference between that and 50, but he's a bit of a gamer
