I'd like to have a thread where people can post some do's and don'ts of being in a band.
I know there's a lot! So what can you think of.

One of mine is Don't wear your own merchandise.I knew these guys at my school that would always wear their own t-shirts and I thought it was very cheesy.

Idk I haven't ever been in a band. I'm not very good at writing music for other people. My music is really my own music.

But I agree, wearing your own band clothes is kinda lame. I'm talking to you Bret Michaels. Motley crue kicked your ass.

If you're a metal band dont say your song titles in a metal voice before every song. Nobody likes metal because its evil these days.

If you are touring with between the buried and me, be good. Sorry job for a cowboy and coheed but iv got my jazz ears on, your music is boring.

everyone always says "don't start bands with yr friends" but my favorite people in the world are in a band with me and i have a blast. we're not really serious though so maybe that's it.

I don't see how you could be in a band without friends. My friends all formed a band without me in.high school. Sucked, but they wrote one EP and all quit.

i wish my friends and i could get around to recording. we have so many great ideas of ep/demo/whatever titles and we are always received really well live but sometimes i think we suck. you know when people compliment you it always seems like they're just sort of being patronizing?

All I know if they kinda got too cocky. a band with 5 best friends means you've got everyone you talk to saying your music is awesome. You think too highly of your abilities. Goes downhill from there. But when you go to record, don't get varied away, simplify everything. They added too mamy layers because they thought they could.

Huh. Never heard that before. Totally bogus.
The only band I've ever been in was with friends. Well, not that me and the drummer working with my guitar riffs while everyone else didn't really do anything or sometimes didn't even show up counts as a band anyways.

i was in a band with one of those attack attack looking guys who thought they were the best and as a result would play as loud as they could.. i have a quiet ass stratocaster, couldn't hear myself. left that shit.

Strange. Only time I've ever jammed was with friends and I really enjoyed it. Wish I could've done more but they didn't really seem too interested so I just make everything myself.
Also as someone mentioned the band members will kinda become your friends anyways.
