Use guitar amp or plug into soundboard with an overdrive pedal?
I have a 5 watt Blackheart Little Giant guitar amp with two 12" cabs. I mic it up to a sounboard and play in a gym hat holds about 600-700 people. Would i get a better tone by selling all of it and buying a really nice overdrive or distortion pedal and using that as a preamp and plug it straight into our soundboard?

Stick with mic'ing your amp. The amp is the main contributor to your tone, pedals are merely designed to compliment your amp's tone and do not create good noises on their own.

Do you not like the sound of your amp mic'd? That's the real question. If you were to go the dirt pedal route, you also need cab emulation for it to work.

No, you would need a full on multi-effects amp/cab digital simulator. The cheapest descent ones go for around $200 (Line 6 Floor POD, Digitech RP series). I've heard lots of good things about the Line 6 POD HD500 ($500). I have the Digitech RP500 ($300 new) and it does alright as I use it at church where I need to plug directly into the PA, it's also great for practice. It sounds better than a cheap modeling amp but not as well as my mid-range solid state Peavey amp.

A pedal by itself will sound really bad. I've done it before because I was curious, and I promptly unplugged from the system and grabbed my amp. You need the head and cabinet for the tone, not just the pedal. If you get a boss gt10 or something you could do head and cabinet simulation and put that straight into the system and that would work. Just make sure it sounds good to the audience and not just in your headphones.

If you want to run a dirt pedal to the mixing board, you need a direct box with cabinet emulation. Behringer makes one called the Ultra-G for about $40.

Digitech Bad Monkey has a cab sim out, it is the cheapest thing I know of you can use, but it is good for classic rock gain levels at best. $50 brand new

Probably the right thing, but just because, I would say look at the Blackstar HT pedals and the AMT Legend amps
