Lunchbox amp decision
Alright, I'm stuck here. I'm looking for a new amp setup.I'm looking for an amp do play mostly metal. I like to play stuff like Avenged Sevenfold, Slipknot, Rise Against; etc (Keep your opinions to yourself please, this isn't about whether or not a band is bad or not). I currently play through A Fender Superchamp XD, with a Boss GE-7 and Metal Muff Distortion pedal (Yes, I know Fenders aren't known for their metal sound). I'm looking for something with a little warmer mid range, and can handle distortion well. This is what I've narrowed it down to:
Marshall Haze 15 Orange Dark Terror Mesa Boogie Mini Rectifier Egnater Rebel 20 I would have to buy a cab too, and I was thinking about going with an Orange PPC112 60 Watt 1x12 closed back cab, since it has a V30, and those seem to be all the rage amongst everyone. Thanks! ![]() |

Dark terror might be the best thing. Good growly midrange. Afaik they handle pedals pretty well.
Don't touch the haze. They are pretty horrible. A lot of people say good things about the rebel but I don't know much about it. I have never really liked the rectifier tone so I won't be helpful with that.

I'm close to buying a Dark Terror.
If you're considering the Mini Rectifier, also consider the 5150 III 50W. It's $999. Same as the Mini Rectifier, I believe.

Dark Terror or Mini Rectifier. I would also look into the Carvin V3M.

I looked at that, I just felt 50W might be too loud for basement playing. |

Yea, I've heard it's a monster... >.<
There's this... ![]() Has a 15W input and a <1W input. I heard it will be somewhere around $500 - $600, but I haven't seen a solid price, yet.

V3m would be a good idea. Great amp. Gonna go try one tomorrow.
As for the 5153, I'm just looking into them ATM. If you can stretch to it it would be a good choice. If I can find one I'm gonna have a play.

The volume difference between 15-25W and 50W is negligible. The volume knob is there for a reason. |

I just thought it would sound bad because I wouldn't be able to crank it. |

Common misconception. It really depends on what kind of tones you are going for. Classic creamy vintagey tones really benefit from cranked power tubes. But metal benefits from preamp gain.

So if I turn the gain up with the volume still somewhat low, I can still get a good tone out of it? |

So, I'll never really know how an amp sounds at low volumes unless I try it out. |

Exactly. There are a ton of large amps that sound great at low volumes. My smallest amp is 50w, and TBH, my 80 and 100w amps sound much better at low volumes. The myth got started with old amps that 1) needed to be cranked to generate any distortion and 2) had such poor quality hardware and circuit design that you needed the benefit of high volumes to hide the poor bass.

Okay, so it looks like I'm looking more at the Dark Terror and the EVH 5150 mini. Would that Orange cab sound good with either of these?

The Orange cab would be killer for both.

get rid of the first and last.
add a carvin v3m with a tube change and now you have a list. personally, out of what you have there, mesa. for me hands down. but the dark terror will do what you want as well. not as versatile. you do not want the egnater. great amp, but not for hi gain of any form. i think the hazes are fairly MEH. i choose not to plug in.

the mini rec is overpriced at $1000, I suggest you take that off your list. for that you could get a 5153 mini.
the haze combo was right up there with the worst amps ive ever played. |
