Questions about valve amps in general and the Blackstar HT-5
Hey guys, so at the moment I have a Marshall MG 250FX. This is great for recording clean tones on, but distorted tones are bad: airy, hollow, thin etc.
A friend suggested that if I wanted to get ballsy distorted guitar tones when recording, I need to get a valve amp. Is this really true? I mean I am wanting to get guitar tones like in this song: When Animals Attack And I have tried switching up mic placement on the Marshall, but it's just not kicking it. The same friend suggested I get a Blackstar HT-5 (I am limited on money I can spend on gear atm) for these sort of tones. Does anyone have experience of using this valve amp, especially for recording? Will 5 watts be enough for recording at home? Thanks!

What you need is a better amp. Really good amps tend to be tube, but that doesn't mean you have to have a tube amp or that only tube amps are good. Solid state gear tends towards the ends of the quality spectrum - either an MG or an Axe-Fx - so there aren't a lot of mid-range solid state amps. So you'll probably end up with a tube amp just based on what's available.
The Blackstar isn't a great amp, but 5 watts is more than enough for home recording. You can record with any wattage amp at all. What's your budget? I'm sure lots of suggestions will follow. You might also consider a preamp solution like a POD, which isn't an amp at all but is quite a good recording tool.

I'd use a HT-5 for slide and maybe punk but it is a bit lacking for most other things. It's certainly a step up from the MG but it isn't going to give you proper tube tone. They are, after all, a hybrid.

dude id sell you my JVM410h for £800 if you want.
its 100w all valve. will cover everything you want and more. just not amazing at super high gain stuff. it might be a bit too much for home recording but will do it well. the only other thing is that you would need a cab. Quote:

I own an HT-5 as my back up to my Sunn/Acoustic halfstack. It sounds great but to be honest if it is in your budget to spend more on something nice and top quality (eg. Orange Tiny Terror). If i could afford one of them i'd give my left leg for one. They sound beautiful. DEFINITELY GO TUBE IF YOU WANT GREAT QUALITY!

Get a multifx. Most new ones have a USB recording interface. You can get great recorded tones.

i'd recommend checking out a hard wired tiny terror if you have a bit more cash to play with, i think it's definitely a step up from the cheaper TT's
