Having trouble getting a good JSX combo. Get the head?

Short version.

Bought JSX combo from GC used.
It sounded AMAZING...but had a strange hum.
Returned it. GC ordered another.
It came in and sounds terrible. Didn't accept it...have store credit (could return for cash).
GC already sent 1st combo for local repair.
They'll give me that one if/when it's fixed.

So...

Wait a couple/few weeks for it to get (hopefully) fixed? Or just have them get me a JSX head?
I have a Marshall 1960 4x12 w/G12T-75s up for sale on CL and have been called about it.
Would probably rather have a 2x12 (only home use), but could probably stand to keep 4x12.
Only thing I'd really miss that's specific to combo is low power setting.

Also I MIGHT have the option of getting a Mesa Mark IV combo...maybe...and that's more money out of pocket, but could be done.

Starting to think I should just order a good JSX head (after having the GC guys wherever it's coming from thoroughly test it).

Edit: love the JSX's versatility. With an OD it's great for jazz, blues, blues rock, classic rock, hair metal, modern metal. Doesn't seem like there's any genre I'm interested in that it isn't very good to excellent at.

Thoughts?

The head is better because you can use low noise preamp tubes in it. (ie. a JJ ECC803 in V1)

They have a tendency to be a tad microphonic so that can be a problem in a combo. With a head they are somewhat isolated from the speakers so you can get away with it.

If I do get the head, what are some good 2x12 cabs if I decide not to use the 1960 4x12?

Actually I should ask what speakers. I could make a cab I guess.

What's the main reason you want to switch away from the 4x12? If you're not going to move your amp (home play only), I don't think I'd sell a perfectly good 4x12 to buy a 2x12. If you can afford to keep it, that's what I'd do.

Well, it sits in the living room and takes up a lot of space. It also gets very loud, and a 2x12 should tame that at least a bit, right? Also I'm not sure I like the G12Ts. Was thinking some V30s?

The space isn't that big an issue though. So maybe I'll just swap out 2 speakers with V30s, set the cab to stereo and just use 2 speakers at a time...?

Well a 2x12 is going to have pretty much the same footprint as a 4x12, just shorter :P So you're not saving any floor space. As for volume, the 4x12 will be slightly (3db) louder but will give a better spread of sound. Amps do have volume controls for a reason! And you'll probably get more lower end with the 4x12.

You could always try a mix of v30s and g12t's in an X pattern. But if you really want v30's, you might be better off selling off the 1960 and buying something that comes with them stock (mesa, orange, avatar etc). Real v30's are what, $130-150 each? You already own the 1960, maybe try it out with that stupidly cheap Mark IV? Can always change cabs afterwards!

Um combo?

I'd take that and sell the rest of your stuff.

A Mark IV urinates over a JSX IMO.

Shakes itself off on it too.

At $700 I could get the Mark IV and still have GC get me the JSX head.

But the Mark IV is a bit intimidating with all those fkn buttons and sliders n crap.

Worth it.

No less hassle than a JSX with its active EQ.

They are a fantastic amp, better than a V too IMO.

Worst comes to the worst, just sell it on for 700 again.

Just grabbed the Mark IV. Wtf GAS IMO. Now I'm guessing I'll keep the 4x12 also instead of selling it for 300.

And I guess I'll just get a refund from GC for the JSX? Doesn't seem like much point in having two ultra-versatile amps?

Or, sell the cab and add that to store credit to get some other badass piece of sex, like a dream guitar.

Third option, collect cash from GC and cab sale and have a party with some hookers and blow.

Can't blame you, it's a great option. Not a lot of resale value though.

Depends on the deal I get for the blow. Could end up turning a profit if the hookers don't use it all.

So I think I'll sell the cab and wait to see what happens with the JSX combo. If it gets fixed, I may go ahead and take it anyway. In the meantime I can see how much I like the Mark IV. If GC calls and says the JSX is fixed, I can decide whether or not I want it. If I don't I can just get cash back then.
