So i'm looking for an amp for (pop) punk in the sound of YouMeAtSix, Rise Against and anything in between.

Basically I'm looking for a modern sounding/ british voiced amp I think.

I want to take it to band rehearsel but don't need it for gigs for a while.

My budget is €300 tops and i'm willing to go used. i'd rather spend less as i'm willing to buy a decent amp when i'm starting to gig.

So far i've been looking at the orange micro terror and tiny/duel terror.

I've been leaning towards the micro terror at the moment as it is pretty cheap and I think that with an eq pedal it would suit my needs. + a great bonus at this point is the size as i need to travel by bus for rehearsels.

Are there any other amps within my price range that I definately need to check out?

I've tried a bugera once but it broke down on the second time it switched on so I don't think this would be a smart move?

It needs to keep up with drums I'm assuming? With a solid state preamp, at 20 watts, I seriously doubt the Micro Terror is gonna cut it. The Tiny Terror isn't going to stay very clean, and the Dual is probably about right.

For punk, you can probably get away with some grit on your cleans, so 15 watts tube is alright, but you really can't go any lower and still keep up with a drummer.

Well I like my clean to be a little crispy so that wouldnt be a problem.

You should really look at the Marshall JCM2000 DSL401. It's 40w, all tube, and has 2 channels. It'll easily do what you want.


Another good place to look is the Marshall JCM900 combos. I'm not sure on the used price of those, but they're great punk amps. Avoid the Dual Reverb version, though, and try to get an SL/X for best results or a MKIII if you can't find one of those.

I used to have a marshall DSL, and i'm kicking myself for selling but those full size heads would be a pain moving by bus/public transportation

Well not to get more complex, but the next issue is do you want power amp distortion or pre amp? Power tubes are very bassy and rich when they overdrive, but slightly flubby to some ears, while pre amp tubes are tighter, and a bit raspier to my ears. Most modern punk and metal is pre amp distortion, while most classic rock and classic punk is power tube. I don't really know where your bands fall, because I haven't heard them.

That said here's a good breakdown, assuming you want tube (in my opinion, you do.) :

15 watts - Most amps will keep up with drummer, but you'll be damn near cranking it meaning truly clean cleans will be impossible. The plus here is you'll get power amp distortion without a boost.

30 watts - All of these should keep up with a drummer, and be able to stay clean while doing it. You should also be able to get power amp distortion at gig levels, but may need a boost.

30+ watts - Definitely keeps up with a drummer and stays clean... But you may not be able to get power tube distortion without a boost.

If on the other hand you are more concerned with pre amp distortion then you want a bigger (50ish) watt amp so that your power amp will stay clean and the pre amp will provide the distortion. If this is your goal then the above poster's recommendation of a JCM2000 is probably a good one.

The jcm200 go for around €450 second hand here so thats not really an option at this moment.

Are there any great cheap clones?


Or would something like the blackstar HT dist X pedal suit my needs for now? I would have to play it over a marshall MG

For this type of music I'd recommend a Valveking! With the Bad Monkey it should get you the tone you require. The cleans are based on a Fender Twin Reverb (or something similar) & you'll have enough overdrive with the gain on half for your needs.

I'd recommend the 212 for it's additional presonance/resonance.

Can't you leave the amp at the place where you are rehearsing? That would mean it doesn't have to be dragged along into the bus every time, so you can actually take a bigger amp. It would be alot easier to keep up with your drummer aswell if you can get something a bit bigger.

You Me At Six mostly use AC30's and marshall bluesbreakers so a used ac15 may be the way to go however you will need a tubescreamer and to get into rise against territory a high gain distortion.

Orange is probably the best way to go in your situation, the majority of British pop punk bands use these and the Tiny Terror is a great place to start (the micro won't keep up with a band), with this amp you won't need any pedals for that You Me At Six sound however you won't have any foot switchable channels for clean and will need a tubescreamer to get those Rise Against sounds.

The best situation would be if you could get a used dual terror, you would then have a clean channel, a fantastic British overdrive channel and with a tubescreamer you could boost yourself into Rise Against territory.

If you can find a used orange thunder that will also suit you as it has multiple channels and very similar features yet a different style to the terror, you should try both.

If you want a lot of variety a 40w Blackstar HT series amp might be good, although personally the sound has nothing compared to the other amps I've mentioned.

Definitely go for the thunder head then, you'll easily be able to find one in your budget if you search around and it will be perfect for what you play.

I was going to suggest http://www.valvepower.co.uk/18w_amp.htm but after looking up the currency conversion that comes to €400.

Try to find a used DSL401. They are much smaller than the bigger DSL's. They are a 1x12 combo.

Alternatively, maybe a Laney Cub.

You'll want the Cub 12. It has a 12" speaker. Personally, I'd go for a DSL401 if you can find one in your pricerange.
