How well can you remember music?

How long does it take you to get to know a piece of music? I meet some people who can hear something really complex just the one time, and then they just know it. They could recognize it again months later or sing some of the main parts and know the form pretty well straight away.

I know personally I have to listen to something over and over before I get to know it, even a pop song written to be memorable.

Depends on how complex it is. If it's something like Protest The Hero, i usually grasp the melodies after hearing it twice.

I have spent more time playing/learning/analysing music and listening to complex music than the average person, so I'd say I have an above average musical memory.

Something like DT it may take me a couple of listens before I know exactly where the instrumentals are going, but I'll probably remember the chorus or intro sooner

If I'm actively listening to it, then I'll pretty much get it after a couple of plays. If not then it takes about 5 listens for it to somehow leak into my brain.
Lyrics take a ridiculous amount though, unless I look them up. Think I'm just too musically orientated...

Depends on the complexity. I've heard some tunes in the past only once that I still remember to this day.

I would say above average. I can memorize songs really quickly imo

I'm assuming this is talking about playing...

Are we talking about playing or just listening?

I'm shit for lyrics, but as far as guitar parts go if I hear it once I usually have it down in my head.

Playing-wise, give me a few tries to get the timing right and I'm good to go. Usually around 2-3.

If we're talking about learning music, I'm pretty good. I'm not a great (or even good) sightreader, but I memorize pieces fairly quickly while going through them. At any rate, I don't need/like sheet music in front of me when I play a piece, even a very long one.

I literally have to play a song a hundred times before I can play the whole thing from start to finish without f@cking it up. Complex songs that is.

Sequoia throne by Protest the hero would be an example. Not too hard, just a lot of parts with fast changes.

I'll listen to songs and melodies more often in my head than I will listening to the actual song.
