Repairing and modding a Crate VC5310
So, I've had this amp for about three years now. I like it a lot, but it's in really bad shape so I want to fix it up while adding some features. Here is a rough list with what I need to do:
Here are some schematics for this amp. Fixing the jack and replacing the pots is simple, although I'd like to find pots that are similar to the stock ones, but I'll work with what I can get. My main concern is the speaker out jack. I don't know anything about amp building, so I was thinking about just soldering a jack to the speaker cables and call it a day. Is that safe, or should I add something between the amp and the jack? It might be a stupid question, but better safe than sorry. EDIT: sorry, I wrote this in the wrong subforum. If a mod sees this, please move the thread to Gear Building and Customizing.

I had a 5310 and sold it, then picked up a 2x12 version of the same amp. First thing to try is reflowing the solder joint on the pots and jacks and hitting it all with DeOxit. You might find that all your issues go away. That did it for me.
You can just add a 1/4" jack for the speakers with no problem. Just do a good job and use wire not instrument cable. Just noticed that a pic of my 5310 is still in my profile pictures. ![]() |

It's a great amp. I love its clean tone, it's so chimey and Vox-ey at times, yet it still has an unique timbre. The dirty channel is meh, but workable enough using an overdrive.

Yeah, I love it's clean tone as well and it sounds great with pedals. I just didn't need a huge amp and was able to sell it for double what I paid for it. Then I found the 2x12 at a pawn shop and got it for $100 because it didn't work. Replaced the HT fuse and it came right up. I still need to get inside it and do the resolder job on the pots and jacks.
