Visigoth - USPM
Given that this place has been a fucking swarming mass of banality lately, here's something that'll perk you up, provided you don't listen to shit music (which most of you do, unfortunately). For the 7 or so people who'll appreciate this, here's Visigoth.
http://visigoth.bandcamp.com/ Listen and worship.

Listening, not worshiping. Something about this band sounds too... modern and poppy to my ears. The production and instrumentation all sounds pretty competent but the music itself doesn't really do much for me.

Pop-y? If you mean heavy metal choruses, then yes fair enough... No less metal than early Manowar or Dio.

Hmm, typically I stick to 80s heavy metal for this kind of thing, but I enjoyed the hell outta what I heard.

Seems to me this genre of metal never really got to be matured. Nice post o/

I don't know, the overall sound just seems very slick and forgettable. I'll give it another spin later because I only listened to the first two tracks. But so far I don't see that this band stands out enough to get repeated listens.

That's kind what I was thinking. Personally, reminded me of Motorhead more than anything (with the palm-muted intro riff and all). Imho Motorhead is great in small doses, not so much in big doses. Edit: Although, I do have to thank TS for helping me find the band Soul Cycle by clicking on the "Power Metal" tag at the bottom of Visigoth's page*. ![]() *I would say Soul Cycle has a Power Metal influence, even though they're not traditional Power Metal.

Yeah and Stevie Wonder reminds me of Jag Panzer because Stevie and Harry Conklin both have tenor voices. But really, this band doesn't have any more or less Motorhead influence than any other speed metal band you care to pick out of a hat. Probably less actually because the vocal style and the production is quite polished compared to bands which might be regarded as Head worship.

Of course they don't. But that's what the intro reminded me of (more so for its simple and good execution than anything). Does it really matter? It was just an offhand comment. ![]()

The first two songs seem to lack in substance. The riffing's decent, but probably not anything you couldn't find in most decent USPM bands, and without the accompanying Euro-Power aesthetic. 'Seven Golden Ships' has some more interesting things going on, but ultimately they don't quite seem to take these anywhere far, and the generic chorus doesn't help matters. Some fairly good vocal work on that track, though. 'Call of the Road' just sounds like something I've heard before fairly frequently, and other 'retro' bands like Canada's Striker have probably done it better, even though I'm not a huge fan of theirs per se. Still, there's some stuff in there to build on, if they continue further.

The only Motorhead comparison I can make out is that both bands have guitars and drums.
It's me and you versus the world on this one, Kytokinesis....

Keep waiting for some kind of pseudo-modern contrivance to jump out and (thankfully) there really aren't any. It succeeds at sounding modern without diverging from the classic heavy/power structure and feel. If the members of Holy Grail or White Wizzard heard this they'd all begin to weep and collapse into a furious circle-jerk.

It's exactly like Argus... new production, pure heavy metal power.

Not bad! I'd say more like High Spirits than Argus though really, and i wasn't too keen on the third track , but I like the EP.
What's with the Motorhead comparison though? Last edited by Metal_Head1 : 02-02-2013 at 01:03 PM. |

They made quite a change in style from their demo to Final Spell, which is OK because I prefer the more abundant power metal elements on Final Spell. I hope they come out with a full-length eventually.
