![]() I've had locking Schaller's on my Mexi Strat for nearly a decade, locking Sperzels on my Suhr for two years (plus two other Suhrs over that same time period) and locking Grovers on my Custom for a few months. Not one problem with any of them, and they definitely make restringing convenient. I don't particularly care enough to change the tuners on my Historics or CS Strat, but they're great and I'd definitely recommend them for convenience's sake. |

+1 to molter, 3 of my guitars have sperzels. actually they happen to be the 3 with bigsby's, makes that horrible process way easier.
I dont have tuning issues on any other guitars enough to warrant changing, but if I could be bothered I'd have them on all my guitars to make re-stringing amazingly easy.

i have schallers on a few, quite a few with grovers, and gotoh (on prestige ibbys), i just don't like sperzel for their locking tuners (nor customer service). but i haven't installed any of their locking tuners. just standard, and have never had an issue other than the sperzels.

Honestly, it might be a recent problem, though I dunno when you tried them. Suhr switched over to Hipshot about 7-8 months ago for some reason, and a decline in quality from Sperzel is always a possible reason.

they're nice but not necessary. as long as you have your re-stringing technique down, you really shouldn't have tuning issues.
and remember to wrap as little of the string as you can afford around the peg. the more string you wrap, the more issues you're likely to have.

Are you talking with the locking or without the locking? You want a solid amount of winds on non-locking to reduce the risk of string slippage.

non-locking. and if you wind it right you'll have no slippage. this is how i wind mine (on what coincidentally happens to be my strat with locking tuners
)![]()

I just get a clean wind from the bottom up and stretch them out. Never had to bother with that knot shit.

i used to wind as much of the string as i could around the peg. always had bad tuning issues. then i read somewhere that it's best to have as little string on the peg as possible. tried it, and bam. no more tuning issues.

Yes. Less string means less windings, which means less contact area and consequently, less points of friction, and friction is the arch-nemesis of tuning stability. |

I don't go overboard, just enough to prevent it from slipping. Never had issues either.
My guitars actually stay relatively well in-tune most of the time actually. ![]()

i think i got mine in like September if i were to guess. i did a flawless install, took my time and i was using a drill press and everything set to depth. it was on my older black Black satin les paul studio.
