Moding a SSS Strat for Grunge

I'm in a 90's alternative/Grunge band and I'm looking for that specific sound. I have a Fender Kurt Cobain signature Jaguar that takes care of most of the songs we're playing (a lot of Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, STP).

However, alternate tunings present a problem as my other guitar is a Fender SSS American Standard Strat that I originally bought to play RHCP type stuff. It doesn't sound TOO bad with distortion but sounds weak enough to annoy me.

I've been looking at a Seymour Duncan SVR-1 vintage hotrail pickup for the bridge (that way I can fit a humbucker into a single coil slot) but I'm not positive if it will pack the punch I'm looking for.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah the hot rails would do it but maybe not the vintage one

The JB Junior is a fantastic pickup for grunge and rock and sounds right at home in a strat. The Vintage Hot rails isn't great IMO. The regular hot rails is nice but for what you want the JB Jr. is peeeerfect. Just don't change the volume pot to 500K like the manual says. The JB is plenty bright, the stock 250K is good for most people.

JB jr or a super distortion s in the bridge will help.

if you don't care about leaving your strat stock, add a switch to add your bridge pickup to positions 4 and 5. 4 can be kind of useless with the bridge pickup, depending on how you're trying to use it, but sounds brutal with a good fuzz, but you get a great punk and grunge tone in position 5.

Yeah I have a super distortion on my Jag. But with minimal funds I don't want to try to throw a full sized humbucker into a spot that was single coil. That's what drew me to the Seymour Duncan's since they're the size of single coils.

Dimarzio has a single coil sized version. It's called the super distortion s.

Dimarzio has tones of rail humbuckers like this

the single version sounds a little different, probably because of the windings and the single coil package, but it is very much almost identical to it's full sized counter part.
