Distortion Pedals
Hey
I was wondering what you guys prefer to use and how you go about getting the most out of your Metal tone/sound. I have been using a Boss Metal Zone MT-2 throughout last year and before that I had a Hot Head distortion. at 1st I loved the MT-2 it was able to give me a better range to of tones to play with compared to the standard setting the Hot Head could offer. As time rolled on and my playing got tighter and better + my understanding of amp settings, pickups, Volumes and the rest, my love for the pedal slowly has dissolved new I constantly have a battle for better tone and a cleaner yet heavier tone and I constantly get a messy distortion sound. Mid last year I invested in a Boss NS-2 to try and help my sound clear up and assist in trying to get a clean yet mean sounding metal tone, it did this to an extent but the MT-2 has just to much gain for the NS-2 to handle at times causing a lot of unwanted feed back or when the NS-2 was doing well with the MT-2 I would find it would suck some of the tone in areas. The sound I'm after or would like to get as close to is the Gojira sound. The gear I use besides the MT-2 ans NS-2 is Guitar - Jackson JS30R Amp Marshall 900 (rehearsal room not my own). You should try using the metal zone as a boost, as a distortion its pretty bad tbh. I would just use the 900 and the noise gate.

Step 1: Sell everything
Step 2: Get a 6505 Step 3: chugchugchug ![]() But honestly, you're not really going to get that quality of sound out of a pedal, which is why almost no metal bands use them. Amp distortion is king for metal. Older Gojira is a 6505 through and through, on the cheap you can get a 5150 (same exact amp, different name) for about $500-550. I wouldn't really use a JCM900 for that tone, especially not if it's a Dual Reverb version (which most are). If you have cash/don't mind saving up/love the tone on their latest album, you could get an EVH 5150 III.

I have a Peavy 6505 cab and Kerry King Head but I'm not able to use that due to not having a lockup or my own rehearsal space. But I will give the 900 gain and NS-2 pedal and see what that could do. |

If you want a good distortion box (and you've got the cash), take a look at the offerings from Wampler:

what? you expect a distortion to make this kinda sound? I have no idea how you'll achieve that sound, and personally a clean sound that's heavy and intense coming from a distortion is an oxymoron to me. but as a suggestion, stop buying boss pedals unless you're using the casing to make your own pedal, modding it/getting it modded, or its already modded. Boss only really have a couple good distortions and that's it, if you haven't found the sound you want with them then I suggest you elevate yourself to the next level of pedals.

Really, you aren't going ot get a Gojira tone out of a JCM900. Even if it's an SL/X or MKIII, it's not going to give you a 6505 tone.
My advice is to sell the 900 and save up some money to get an EVH 5153 50w. It's got a headphone out, so you can practice through headphones when you aren't in a rehearsal space, and it's fairly small, so size shouldn't be an issue. They just released combo versions at NAMM, although I'm not sure when those will be coming out, but you could always grab a 1x12 with at least a 50w speaker if you want to practice loud with it.

Wait you have a kk head and your feeding it a metalzone? Grab one of thousands of tube screamer clones and call it a day.

I don't remember saying that I wanted the Gojira sound I just liked something close to it but since my last response I have been able to use the KK head and 6505 cab without any other pedals and it sounds killer not to the Gojira sound but just a heavy for the sound I like and my band need.

You first said you wanted distortion, but you said a couple posts back you want a clean sound. From a distortion box.
Get a tubescreamer/clone and put it in front of the KK. Or get a 6505

use some brain power. he doesn't mean completely clean. He just means cleaner than a shitty mt2 but still ballsy. and using my amazing powers of deduction i can probably assume by clean he means articulate/ less muddy. you should go hang in the electric guitar forum. You will feel more at home. Our humble intellect is no match for your ultra literal brain.

I don't really think of Gojira when I think of cleaner distortion sounds; I think of like Psycroptic or The Faceless. Gojira is pretty saturated IMO.
