I think I dun' goofed.
Heya! I just picked up a new Jazzmaster, and along with it a Way Huge Swollen Pickle fuzz.
I was so excited, and finally got to tweak with them both today when the fuzz pedal came in. Unfortunately, I didn't know that the Swollen Pickle would carry such an overwhelming low end. This attribute of the pedal does not mix well with the bass amp I'm playing through, the low-end even with settings tweaked is completely overpowering and drowns out any other note I try to play. Don't get me wrong, the pedal sounds AMAZING, if you want to make noise and make ears bleed. Maybe in the future I see myself picking another one up, but for now.... I think I want to trade for something less tone-changing and more fuzzy. TL;DR/What I'm here to ask you: What other pedals are in the same price range as the Swollen Pickle (the $100-ish reissue, not the old school $400 ones haha) that I could possibly trade for? Or what other pedals (I'm thinking fuzz faces?) can offer a good scooped lead-tone but a fairly clear low-end? I'm looking to play a lot of Smashing Pumpkins, Kyuss, Bush, maybe some Local H, Truckfighters, etc. I have no real reason behind it, but something has been keeping me from getting a plain ol' big muff. I don't know. Just rubbin' me the wrong way HALPP PLZ Last edited by Patty-cakez : 02-01-2013 at 10:53 PM. |

I think your problem here is the amp you're using. Have you considered a new amp?
In addition, have you tried playing with the EQ? Most of the time, fuzz pedals are able to be used with both guitar AND bass, due to the low end they provide and can produce. Switch to a guitar amp, and you may see a huge difference. The easiest thing to do would be to take your guitar and pedal to a local shop and run them through a few gutiar amps.

I was really liking the tone from the bass amp before, when I was playing a lot of metal.
I never had an issue with such insane low end. With the metal muff before, sounded fine..just really beefy. But with this it's as if I can play any note/chord and if I barely touch the low 6th string all I hear is the rumble and it overwrites any other note I was playing before. I have considered new amps but I don't have the money. I supposed I could've bought one instead of the squier jazzmaster, but I was tired of only having a single guitar that limited me to a certain play style. Dunno. I'm just trying to make the best of what I've got for now. |

Well, if you aren't going to get a new amp, then your best bet is either an EQ pedal or a different fuzz.
Honestly, though, for the price of a new EQ pedal, you could get a used Peavey Vypyr 30. They go for anywhere from $80 - $120 on Guitar Center's used stuff. There are a few onthere now for $100, one for $90 and one for $120.

To be honest, even if I had the money I don't think I'd get a new amp either. The clean tones from the bass amp are unparalleled, and when I desire the low-end I get exactly what I want from it.
This pedal specifically packs an assload of low-end boost. That's where my problem lies. I'm looking into some EQ pedals, I do have the old metal muff and MXR noise clamp for trade (the swollen pickle is surprisingly quiet when volume is down). Thanks for the replies. |

Why are you playing through a bass amp?

Tried tweaking the trim pots inside the pedal? Also, Joyo makes a nice 6 band EQ for like $40. Could be worth a look if you go that route

Spend time with the pedal. I think there are two internal controls that need to be addressed as well. They will affect your eq.

There are trim pots inside the pedal. Mess with them. And mess with all the knobs. Turn them all the way down, crank them, find where you do and don't like each knob. It'll help you tweak it better

MXR Deluxe Bass Fuzz.
Retail (New) its about $130-ish. Personally i have no expirience with it, but from what ive seen though youtube reviews and such, its pretty close to what youre looking for. But dont take my word for it and look it up. Last thing i want to be is that guy that talked you into buying something you didnt want. |

Isn't the point of bass fuzzes to retain the low end that is sometimes lost?

Couldn't have said it better. The efficiency of the Swollen Pickle is boosting frequencies you were less aware of before.

I have zero experience with that pedal, but just based on the name, it sounds like it'd be the complete opposite of what he wants... ![]()

"Guys I'm using this fuzz through a bass amp and it's giving me too much bass. What should I do?"
Well, get a new amp and it won't do that "Naaaahhhh!" Good logic, right there. Why did you even ask us for help again?
