Amp problem!
I play through a Peavey Vypyr 60W combo and lately I've noticed when about half volume on OD channel, sometimes when I'm playing a low chord like an open E or hold a note muted on my low E string, my amp makes a deep loud noise, sounds like 'WWOOMMMPP'. What might be the problem here? Tubes? Speaker? My guitar pickups?? Thanks!

How old is the amp? It has one 12AX7 for a PI and 2 6L6 power tubes. Have they ever been replaced?
Can you get the same noise with a different guitar? Different cable?

I got it a little over a year ago, stock tubes. I haven't tried a different guitar or cable. I will try that.

The amp also seems to be making a small amount of noise when at half volume and guitar volume is at 0.

Buddy half volume is LOUD. Do you have it at noon or do you mean .5 of 1-10? Also unplug the cable from the amp to see if the noise goes away. To an extent all amps make a certain level of noise even with nothing plugged in. Can you describe the noise?

I understand that. Actually, I have it a little less than half (11 o'clock). Makes the same amount of noise with or without the cable in the jack. It just sounds like soft wind, I mention it because I don't remember it ever doing that before. |

I'm more concerned about the 'WOMP' sound, if anyone knows anything about that.

Try a different guitar and cable first. Don't use any pedals in front of the amp.

I had this problem with a solid state fender of mine, half of the volume at first, then slowly as i kept using the amp the volume got lower and lower and the hum got louder, and the same referenced WOMP sound with the E, and even higher chords. I could hit the top right above the right channel pots and it would pop, also 3 of the knobs crackled when i turned them, not old pots either. Wasnt the guitar or the cable it did it with no guitar at the end, weird. As solid states are basically a big circuit board i had to get a new amp. Tube amps are usually completely wired circuits or almost, it might be easier to fix, check all the wire connections inside and especially for cold solders. Just a hint, maybe youll find your problem. Worth a try, ehh?

It should be noted there are capacitors in tube amps that can hold a lethal charge well after an amp is switched off. Be very careful, its not worth killing yourself over.
