I encountered this chord shape in a tab:

I can't seem to finger it without muting or muffling one of the middle strings.

It's actually arpeggiated in the tab, but you have to let ring all the notes so it's the same fingering as if I had to play the chord. Any ideas?

I managed it in two ways:
x
3 -- ring
0
3 -- middle
5 -- little
3 -- index

I found the next one easier, but I can bend back the top joint of my index finger quite well (it is doing a half bar, but doesn't mute the g-string):

3 -- middle
0
3 -- index
5 -- little
3 -- index


Another idea might be to try a different tuning, but I can't think what.

If you don't mind sacrificing the d and f ringing together, then you can just lift and return a finger to fret 3 of the d-string, and not worry about fretting the 5 on the a-string.

It might help if we new the context of the song/the actual arpeggio which is picked out.

Thanks for your replies. Here's the tab (3rd-4th bar):



The first suggestion is awkward as hell and I can't do it without muffling at least one string at the moment, but I may be able to pull it off with some practice. The second one is definitely impossible for me. I'd tried the third, but it doesn't sound as good without the ring. The 4th (liette's) is out of the question as I can't use my thumb at all for fretting—too much pain.

I think I'll just practice the first one until I get it right.

you only really need 3 fingers for the piece.

Use your thumb for the G on the low E string
