Search for the right noise gate!
So the hum that I've been getting from my JCA50H's dirty channel has been bugging me for a while now. Its fine when I turn the gain back, but when I try to push the amps drive harder (past noon), there is a very noticable hum when the strings are muted, and I get a god awful feed back, when I dont want it. This occurs on my lp, strat, and tele....
So I'm thinking that I should pick up a noise gate of some sort to help with my problem, but which one??? The two criteria that I have for this noise gate is: 1. Gets rid of the background hiss/hum when strings are muted. 2. I'd still like to be able to get some controlled feedback when I'm playing live. I guess I could just switch the peadal off for these sections?? Oh, I'm trying to buy the cheapest pedal I can, without sacrificing tone/features; if ya know what I mean I don't really have a set budget. Like I said, I'm willing to pay whatever to get the right pedal for the job, but I would like that amount to be as small as possible ![]() I've done a little research, and I've come up with a few contenders..... not trying to limit my options, of course. 1. ISP Decimator 2. MXR noise clamp 3. MXR Smart gate 4. EHX Hum Debugger I'm a huge MXR fan, and I know they make a great product. Right now, I'm leaning towards the Smart Gate, based on reviews I've read, it's price, and the fact that I could just go pick one up at the local L&M tomorrow. Whats your guy's opinions? Is there a great pedal out there that I've over looked??? Thanks for reading!! SP

I bought a MXR smart gate a few months ago, and it is a great pedal.

I use the Boss NS-2, which I've had for about four years, and it works great in my opinion, if you haven't checked that one out yet.

I did consider it, but I've read a lot of negative reviews about it being a tone sucking machine I'm not a huge Boss fan in general....

Dont get the NS-2, it sucks all kinds of tone. I tried one and i though it was a lemon, tried another one and had the same problem. Decimator all the way, one knob, zero problems. Its the best gate i've tried and most people will agree. I've never heard anyone talk bad about the ISP, its just a great pedal.

I agree! I've only heard nothing but good things about the isp.
The only reason I'm asking about the mxr stuff is because, like I said, I can just dodge down to the local l and m, and pick one up, whereas I would have to order the isp in. I got a gig saturday, and would really like to have the pedal for then, if possible.

Well L&M has 30 day cash back return policy, so I would get the MXR smart gate and if it doesn't blow your mind, take it back after your gig and get a Decimator G-String. Then you'll know that the added hassle and cost was necessary.

I just picked up an NS-2 and I love it. Cheap- $99 and you can do an x pattern. No tone suck for me. I will say if you have it maxed out there is a delay at times- between start of playing and sound output- again at times stopping playing with a mil-sec of noise. It's not much at all. I am happy I picked it up.
I have used an ISP before many times. I would have loved to pick one up but I wanted the flexibility of x-pattern without paying the extra $$$. It's the best noise gate I have used.

TBH, I have a g-string decimator & I find it difficult to get a setting which allows for some feedback but control over staggered patterns. I just turn it off though

I second or third or fourth or whatever the MXR Smart Gate. Cool pedal and it does what you're looking for just fine.

I have not noticed an ounce of "tone-suck" with my Boss NS-2. I'm not sure where people are getting that. However, I turn it off for leads and cleans, because in order to tame the high-gain howl of my amp when muted, it has to be set fairly aggressively. I can still get feedback on that setting though.
