i'll miss him. he tried to restore a lot of tradition to the catholic church. and even though his detractors will say they forced his hand or it was too little too late, he did say condoms could be considered morally permissible depending on the circumstances amongst other things.

and, well, i'll just paste this stuff from thinkprogress:

anyway, i think he was a good pope in that he championed some progressive causes (obviously he's not going to suddenly become pro-choice or anything) while also trying to bring back the traditions of the catholic church, most notably the tridentine mass. i know it's not a popular opinion though. not really going to bother arguing with anyone. i'm sure they have valid enough reasons for disliking him too.

Yes, progressive causes. Perhaps the new pope will drag the Catholic Church, kicking and screaming, up to the 19th century this time. Perhaps the blatant homophobia, misogyny, and public protection of pedophiles will come to an end. I'm not holding my breath though. Nothing really to feel proud or even to commend a line of old men dressing up in robes and funny hats acting deep and commanding a good portion of the world to do and believe batshit insane ideas. The same applies to Islamic clerics in the Middle-East. It's just simply ridiculous. It's like congratulating a 30 year-old adult somehow still in high school after they've passed a spelling test.

Lol this, everyone knows hardly anyone wants to be pope because you become it to die while in office. It's like the most glamorous rest home ever

Now hopefully they get a pope that will make the church welcoming to GLBT people.

I don't see how it would be damaging. I got called C-dog for a number of years despite not being a dog. I turned out alright.

Are you trying to be defensive and coy about the Catholic Church's homophobia, misogyny, and child abuse history? If so, you're a sick fuck without any ability to empathize or care for those who have been neglected and abused. You need a good traumatic event to shake your life up a bit. Give you a reality check.

I don't think it's unreasonable to show massive disdain for an organisation which has pursued policies that have directly and indirectly contributed to massive epidemics, discrimination/persecution and child abuse.

As far as 'things to get worked up about' go, death, discrimination, and child rape are close to the top.

Plus they don't seem to want Women to serve in the church or want a more modern church. ^
