DiMarzio Neck Pickup

So, I have an Ibanez RDG321. The stock pickups are alright but I want a nice set of Dimarzio's.

I'm going with an X2N in the bridge (love Chuck Shuldiners tone.)

My question is; What would be a good Pickup to go with the X2N in the neck? I don't really care for nice clean tones, I just want to have some nice, tight, heavy rythmn tones. I was thinking along the lines of a Deactivator?

It can not be stressed enough how terrible D Activators are for virtually all purposes.

What sort of tone are you after example? Bright, dark? Thick, thin? "Tight, heavy rhythm" doesn't say much, because both tightness and heaviness are down to your amp and how you play, not properties of the pickup (plus it's not exactly common to play 'tight' rhythm with the neck pickup).

Just as a general rule of thumb, an even spec and tone balance match for the X2N would be the Evolution Neck, though it's not what I'd go with for that particular guitar. The FRED and LiquiFire will be a better match for the snappier sound of the longer scale length if you insist on using DiMarzio pickups, but the Seymour Duncan 59/Custom Hybrid or bridge model of the Pearly Gates will work better for giving a balanced neck tone with some cut to it, without sounding completely thin and lifeless. The neck model of the SD Distortion will split the difference between the Evo and the others and may be the sensible choice if you're not entirely sure what you want out of a neck pickup.

New pickups aren't going to do much of anything if your playing threw a Spider. I would suggest you save your money.
And if you want to change your tone get a new amp.

Oh, haha fair enough. Most other threads I've read recommend them. What is it that makes them bad?

Sorry, I'm not the greatest with explaining tone sounds. I'd compare it to Chuck Shuldiner of Death. Just that old school 80's Death metal rythmn, but also able to pull of something like Havok. I hope that makes things at least a little clearer

All good man, I get were you're coming from. I'm saving for either Peavey 6505+, Mesa Dual recta, or Marshall Valvestate 8100.
