Will Sellotape Catch Fire?

The wire coming out of my hair straighteners has a slight split (it sparks a lot) in it near where it joins to the actual straighteners. I put a small amount of electric tape to cover it this morning, however it's starting to peel away already. I can't seem to find any more of it anywhere in my house, I do have sellotape and parcel tape though.

So my question is, if I cover the split with tape can it potentially set my hair or the wire on fire?

Sellotape probably won't catch fire, but crap wiring will. I think the only sensible answer is to get new straighteners. There are many stories of fires started by them so you shouldn't fuck about with them.

I heard throwing the hair straightener while it's on into a full bathtub while you're in it does the job great.

It will briefly set on fire if it gets hot enough. Then it just melts.

The wiring will heat up but shouldn't catch fire unless they have some sort of enamel coating. Everything around the wires will sure as fuck melt and/or catch fire, however.

This.

>Open straightener
>detach the two wires coming from the outlet (either by unsoldering or unscrewing, depends how it's fitted
>Cut wire before the split
>remove insulation on the newly cut end
>remove insulation on the two separate wires that will be inside
>attach wire again in same fashion
>reassemble straightener
