Repairing electronics
Hey all,
Well my old guitar has crapped out.It's a washburn MG-24 mercury series. The jack is tight but still cuts out.The tone pot crackles.The volume doesn't seem to work...sometimes other times it does work.The pickup switch is stuffed.If I flick it one way it won't work then I hit and it works. Bassicaly I want to repair on a budget of about $20.My dad has a soldering iron and various oils and shit.So what can I do to go about repairing this?

You can replace all the components for around that. I don't know what that guitar has but they will probably fairly standard pot values and switch type

^+1 it'd be cheap to just replace everything, the pot values are probably stamped on the back of each pot. You might simply try to reflow the solder joints and use some contact cleaner on the pots though, especially if your dad already has contact cleaner.

before you buy anything have you opened up your guitar and had a look if everythings soldered properly?

If things are that bad I would just totally rewire it. Probably just bad solder joints. There are some great tutorials on youtube, but if you have no clue what you're doing you'd probably be better off taking it to a tech

Yeah I'd replace both pots, switch, and the jack. Done deal, should work perfectly afterwords (if soldered properly).
