The problem is that if we didn't divide into all these little subgenres (and sub-subgenres in some cases), then they'd be no way to say, "This band sounds different than that." For instance, if someone says, "Hey, I want to listen to some Metal"...well, that's very vague to a guy like me (who loves a lot of different subgenres of Metal). Is that someone saying they want to hear some Death Metal or some Black Metal or some traditional Heavy Metal? Subgenres allow you to be more specific.


It's fine if you don't like using subgenres, but they have their uses. And people should really learn what is and is NOT within a certain subgenres. The reason we have so many different subgenres is because music is NOT a static thing; people are constantly making new music. Sometimes that new music doesn't fit within what's already been done, so we need a new subgenre. It's that simple.
