REM sleep
If I'm sleep deprived, instead of the usual light feeling of dropping off to sleep, I feel like I'm dropping into paralysis and straight into REM sleep.
Some context, I didn't sleep Tuesday night, but I got a full nights sleep last night, but when I woke up I just kept dropping off again. However, as I said earlier, when i dropped off and waked instantly I felt tense and one time, I couldn't open my eyes or move. I know about sleep paralysis, but I didn't think it was possible at the exact moment you fall asleep. Also, general sleep paralysis thread?

What does this have to do with REM sleep?

Good point. I meant to ask if anyone else drops straight into REM sleep like that.

I spend a couple of hours every morning falling in and out of sleep. Dunno if it's REM, but it is pretty annoying.

I'm not quite sure, I don't think I do anyways, most of my REM dreams happen halfway or at the end of my sleep so yeah... I wish I was lucky enough to fall straight away, I'd have loads of dreams

Generally the only people who will fall straight into REM sleep are narcoleptics, this is bad as we need all phases of sleep to function properly (and especially to learn fine motor skills - i.e playing guitar), it's unlikely that you dropped straight into REM sleep without some sort of background neurological deficiency, you were probably just really tired + some sleep paralysis.
Best plan is to try and go to bed and wake up at the same times every day, you'll feel so much better.

I've had that a couple of times. I honestly thought I was about to die. Falling asleep going straight to REM is unusual but it does happen. There's a technique to getting more good (REM) sleep by napping every couple of hours for a 30 minute period. Apparently it's a bastard to get used to, but once you manage it, you fall straight into REM sleep as soon as you close your eyes, getting more REM sleep every 24 hours than usual, so you actually feel better rested. |

We've got a billion, but what's one more? I always used to get it around when I was in high school. I got it bad. For some reason, I felt an incredibly heavy pressure being forced in my head when it happened. Like, I'm pretty sure it was a near-death experience. Nowadays, I seem to always get it should I sleep out of sync with my sleep schedule. Like, 9/10 times it happens. I never saw a doctor about it, but I figured as long as I go to bed in sync with my sleep schedule, I should be okay. Quote:
That's actually pretty common should you get it frequently. All you can really do is twitch yourself awake to prevent it from happening. Eventually it goes away. Quote:
Well, sleep paralysis is a form of REM sleep.

Those quantified self REM sleep tracking devices seem nifty, although I would probably just stare at the results without changing any habits whatsoever. "Well there you have it, I didn't sleep enough last week. Time to play Indiscipline for three hours with extra talking breaks. So I carried the REM sleep device around with me... playing little games, like... not looking at it, and then... looking at it... to see if I still liked it...
I DIDN'T!!" |
