Pre-amp loop vs. effects loop.

i've got 2 questions on these...

1. what is the difference? i know it's where they come in the order of things, i just don't understand where.

2. which would be best for using an amp as a power amp? also, i've heard some amps, when used like this, you can't use the on board volume, you have to use the volume in your pre-amp.

I've never heard of a pre-amp loop, only FX loop

You might need to explain a little more. Do you mean a loop before the preamp (i.e. not actually part of the amp), or a loop that's in the preamp? A loop in/after the preamp is the same thing as an effects loop. I guess a preamp loop could be a more descriptive term for a pre-MV effects loop, but I don't see that terminology used consistently enough to be meaningful.

The amp's onboard volume may or may not work depending on where the master volume is in relation to the effects loop. It varies by amp.

well, for example i've got an old Crate G120c XL and it has a effects loop on the front and line in and out for both right and left channels on the back.

but i've also got a peavey transtube head that has similar connections.

The line out and line in are meant for recording and CD/MP3 types of play along. They've probably got different impedances that won't work as well as an effects loop for pedals.
