Stereo Cables different than MONO ones?

So several years ago, when I first started playing guitar, Musicians Friend sent me stereo 1/4" Monster cables instead of the traditional type with only one output connector. Because I didn't have any other cables to use, I simply pulled the two connected stereo cables apart so that I then had two guitar cables.

My question: Are stereo cables pulled apart in this way, any different sound-wise than the regular single output MONO cables? Is there anything going on with stereo cables that would cause them to sound inferior than MONO cables when only using one of them?
