There are lots of good options out there for really cheap, all you have to do is look used. Look on your Craigslist too.

Get a Digitech Bad Monkey, you said you're skint? I paid something like £26 for mine brand new and for that price it is nothing short of amazing, a great sounding tubescreamer type effort!

Don't take my word for it, check out the reviews and demos around the net!
