Yesterday I spent 12 hours working on this IDM song, just mixing and getting the right tones. Motherfucking Cubase started crashing while exporting all of the sudden. I eventually deleted the file and uninstalled the program. I'm done with it: the interface just goes waaay over my head (maybe I'm too dumb), it eats up wayy too much ram and crashes randomly. I thought maybe you gurus could help me lol. I don't ask for much: easier interface and not as system heavy if possible, since I'm running a low end laptop here. And since I'm doing this topic already, could you rec me some synth and string vsts? Thanks in advance.

I think you'll love Studio One, the interface is so easy to work with it's an absolute joy. Have a mess about with the free version and see what you think.

Reaper is powerful and awesome but I wouldn't call it easy to work with, the workflow is if anything a little more complicated/unintuitive than Cubase.

Also check out FL Studio and Ableton, they're geared more towards virtual instruments and looping, so it should be ideal for what you're working on.

I would go with Reaper as well. I can't compare it to Cubase but its not to bad to figure out in the end.

I'd advice against REAPER if you're doing Electronic Music. It's not that well suited to it.

Upgrade your computer then pick up Ableton Live. With EDM, you need a decent system because of all the virtual instruments you load.

And I meant IDM It's still electronic music tho. And I do compose in other genres, so I don't mind having a DAW not completely suited for it.

Hmmm.... I've got a problem with the idea of Cubase crashing randomly. Cubase, in my experience over the past, geez... 15 years is that it is rock solid for the most part. The Cubase forum over at the Steinberg forum documents all of their bugs pretty thoroughly and offers fairly regular updates.

Have you tried there? Just be prepared to put in your serial number to register as a user or they'll nuke you.

They used to allow unregistered people to post, and as soon as they locked out unregistered people, the number of people posting "this sh!tty software keeps crashing on me" went down by about 85%. It seems that warez versions are notoriously crap.

Usually the remaining problems can be traced to dodgy hardware or a bad driver or something - not so much Cubase itself. The people there are good at helping to uncover those things.

Now running an Eleven Rack with Pro Tools 10.3.3 - it's amazing and I'm having ball with it - worth every penny. PT 10 is tops IMO and the Eleven Rack is a work of art!

I noticed that a few days ago when this thread first started, it's not something I've ever heard anyone else complaining about. Without wanting to accuse TS unnecessarily, but isn't that sort of instability often related to pirated software?

Usually, yes, due to pirated software. As I say, the number of people moaning about instability dropped by about 85% after Steinberg required forum users to include their serial number in their profile. (only viewable by admins)

However, there ARE people on those forums who are registered users who complain about Cubase crashing, but those can usually be attributed to a bad driver or some other faulty hardware of some sort, and not actually a Cubase problem.

Mixcraft is pretty intuitive, comes with some built in amp modeling capability. I'm not sure that reaper is sufficiently robust.

Studio One is by far the easiest daw to use.

Especially compared to Reaper which seems to be the most recommended daw here(probably because it's free).

Generally, I'd be saying you haven't spent enough time with REAPER if you think it's less robust than Mixcraft (which last I checked is basically GarageBand for Windows). That said, if memory serves it is better suited to electronic music than REAPER without being a PITA for using real instruments either, and it's still cheap (one of REAPER's huge draws). I'd check out Mixcraft, maybe see if you can get an older version that would be more suited to your machine.
