Half Stack Question
I picked up a Marshall Jcm 2000 50 Watt DSL and a Marshall 1960 Vintage Cab.
I have a problem. At higher volumes I completely loose the liquid feeling thats great for soloing. At low bedroom volumes it plays great, it's very silky smooth feeling. At those higher volumes OD1 and even OD 2 feel more like Crunch channels, not very solo friendly. If I try to turn up the gain on the amp or my distortion pedal (MXR Custom Badass Distortion) it just causes uncontrollable, and very loud, feedback (and I even use a ICM decimator). My amp does not have a master volume so I was wondering if a attenuator would be what I would need for this issue? Signal Chain: Guitar (Carvin)-Custom Badass-ICM Decimater-Amp. |

Buddy an attenuator would not help.
Are you running the distortion pedal at the time of feedback? Have you tried just an OD for a boost to help? Can you describe the change in tone a bit more?

Possibly a preamp tube issue. What are your amp's settings?

It's not a tone problem.
Let me put it this way. On a amp with a clean, crunch, and lead channel you wouldn't pick the crunch channel to do lets say tapping on. That's because there's not much gain and that would make you have to press down on the strings harder for the tap to come through. That's what happens as I turn the volume up, it gets louder but I loose gain. Both Od Chanel's become equivalent to crunch channels. |

A DSL has a Master Volume.
 Change your EQ settings. It's normal to need different settings at vastly different volumes.

You have a vintage series Marshall cab so it has V30's right? If so, then your tone will change with increased volume. Eq settings at lower volume will not work at high volume levels.
With my V30's I turn the mids on my amp down a lot at higher volumes to smooth the tone out. The speakers are providing plenty on mids already so if you are using too much your tone will get overly raw, cold and ugly sounding.

Yep, you probably need to EQ for different volumes. Our ears handle different frequencies at different listening volumes. How about swapping out that distortion pedal for a clean boost? That should help with getting back some of that liquid lead tone.

To the poster that said Pre amp you were right, along with old soldering issues. I took it to the shop to get fixed so its fine now.
Thanks to everyone for trying to help but it wasn't even related to a tone problem. The problem was that I couldn't get much gain out of it, nothing more than a crunch. |
