Bluegrass studies/etudes.
I have to do a project for school about Bluegrass, I was wondering if anyone had any studies/etudes they use/have used?

Have you tried maybe... actual bluegrass songs? I know it seems a little left-field but I'm sure they exist...

Sorry, I may of not stated what I'm looking for. I know there a bluegrass songs. But I'm looking for more technique based studies. Or things I could make a lesson about, such as the Mandolin "chop" or cross picking.

Make your own? Seems strange that you should skip out on the actual work for a project like this.

The use of the words "studies" and "etudes" in relation to bluegrass is a bit odd....
It's a folk form for the most part. We talk about "licks" and "runs" and such. There are signature figures... The Famous "Flatt run" or "G run" (after Lester Flatt) or the "shave and a haircut, shampoo" ending lick. Mandolin "chop" chords are full, four-string chords that are used on the instrument to play the typical rhythm figures for mandolin. They call them "chop" because they are damped right after the stroke, so you get that typical "chunk" sound. There are plenty of resources on the web to show you these basic items tabbed out. |
