Read the sticky at the top of the forum and repost. There are lots of different sounds for "metal". You're not giving any budget, location, new or used. Etc.
Help us help you. p.s. A combo is perfectly suitable for gigging. edit* saw the budget, but my point is still valid.

egnater vengance arent bad amps for the money. just get some sort of eq to dull the highs a bit since egnaters have a tendancy to take on a fizzy ice pick sound at high gain settings. I have a renegade coupled with a MXR EQ and it is just amazing.

What type of metal? Till you give a specific type of metal I will suggest an Orange Dark Terror.

i'm not saying it's better than the others, but Blackstar makes a pretty good amp for metal and it's versatile enough to get other sounds for when you want to branch out eventually.

Every suggestion here is a baseless shot in the dark since you have not defined "metal". Judas Priest is a hell of a lot different than The Black Dahlia Murder. Everyone has their own definitions of "metal", and you need to define that for any real help.

There is a difference between doing metal and replicating a sound, the 6505 these days is one of the main poster metal amps, it will do judas priest, it will handle anything you can brand metal and it will handle it fine. Will it replicate every sound created by a metal band? No it won't, but it does not have to replicate it.
If someone comes in and sais "I want the sound from appetite for destruction" or "I want the sound from Metallica Black Album" then you're asking for a replication. He didn't ask that, he asked for a good amp for Metal. A 5150/6505 is a good amp for metal.

Judas Priest isn't a good band to name concidering how much they changed heyre tone through out the years. I would say anthrax instead of priest because anthrax really has one sound.

Fair enough. I only really listen to British Steel, so that's what I think of when I think of them. Very, very low gain sound compared to modern stuff coming out today.
