Which Amp: A, B, or C? (Sound Clips Included)
I've narrowed my search down to three amps, each of which I've been able to try out. However, I want to get some unbiased ears - complete strangers who have no idea what it is I'm plugging into, so they can give unprejudiced feedback on which sounds the best.
I have uploaded 18 short sound clips (9-28 seconds each, with most under 20): three amps, three pickup settings (bridge, middle, neck), two channels (clean, drive). Each clip is me playing my own licks on my own guitar, with my own (and only) pedal, so there's absolutely zero guesswork on how well such-and-such amp will mesh with my gear, my playing, my style. Here is the full set of clips: https://soundcloud.com/dumbness/sets/amp-clips Here are the individual clips: https://soundcloud.com/dumbness/001.../sets/amp-clips https://soundcloud.com/dumbness/002.../sets/amp-clips https://soundcloud.com/dumbness/003.../sets/amp-clips https://soundcloud.com/dumbness/004.../sets/amp-clips https://soundcloud.com/dumbness/005.../sets/amp-clips https://soundcloud.com/dumbness/006.../sets/amp-clips https://soundcloud.com/dumbness/007.../sets/amp-clips https://soundcloud.com/dumbness/008.../sets/amp-clips https://soundcloud.com/dumbness/009.../sets/amp-clips https://soundcloud.com/dumbness/010.../sets/amp-clips https://soundcloud.com/dumbness/011.../sets/amp-clips https://soundcloud.com/dumbness/012.../sets/amp-clips https://soundcloud.com/dumbness/013.../sets/amp-clips https://soundcloud.com/dumbness/014.../sets/amp-clips https://soundcloud.com/dumbness/015.../sets/amp-clips https://soundcloud.com/dumbness/016.../sets/amp-clips https://soundcloud.com/dumbness/017.../sets/amp-clips https://soundcloud.com/dumbness/018.../sets/amp-clips Feel free to skip around; by no means do you have to listen to all 18 if you don't want to! (They add up to 5 minutes, 19 seconds). If you hear anything you like, let me know; if you hear anything you don't like, DEFINITELY let me know. |

I liked 002, 006, 009, 010, 014 and 015. All the rest of the clips were "meh", in my opinion.

Were there any that stood out as bad, or were the rest just kind of average? (I'm counting "no" votes as well as "yes" votes).

To be very honest, I thought they all sounded bad. I don't know what kind of sound you're going for though, and I don't know if what I dislike is because of the amp, your playing, your guitar, or just the recording equipment/process. I thought they all sounded very weak and raspy/harsh.
Out of them though, I thought the best were 1, 2, 6, 9, 15 & 18 4, 10 & 11 were okay. 7 and 13 were horrible.

I must be honest, this is stupid and has pretty much no point. Why does it matter if I like a clip or not? How does that impact what amp you will like for your situation?

I think it's a combination of recording equipment and taste. All I have available is a cheap laptop mic, and at the moment I don't have access to what I or any musician would consider a good recording space (acoustically speaking). That being said, you're probably also picking up on a deliberate tonal preference on my part - I really don't like a lot of bass, and always go for a "thin" sound. The crappy mic aside, that accounts for a good deal of what you term weak. Marking "no" on 7 & 13 Last edited by kindadumb : 03-17-2013 at 09:35 PM. |

Your involvement aside, I'm actually finding this very helpful. I'm not sure where your normative statements are coming from. |

+1 These kinds of threads usually do not work out to well. TS - try this: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/foru...d.php?t=1387138 That's how we roll around here. It is much more constructive. ![]()

Eh, I've tried that kind of thread multiple times and it didn't do much for me, so I'm trying something else. I've gotten good feedback from two people already that's been very constructive for me; if anybody thinks this thread isn't constructive for them...oh well. |

You should pick the amp you think sounds best. What does it matter what I think? I have no idea what you are going after, and my tastes probably aren't aligned with yours. |

I listened to a lot of them. They all sounded really thin to me.

No not really. You said you only had a crappy mic. Hard to do much with that

I like the idea of the thread with the blind aspect of it, but without some kind of reference tone that you're shooting for, it seems less useful (purely subjective). It might make more sense to have a short clip (even on youtube) of some song/riff that you want to emulate, then do your best with the amps you have. That doesn't account for the laptop microphone... not the best platform for this.
I think I liked 17 the most, it seemed to be the fullest sounding one to me, which you indicate is not what you're looking for. 4 and 10 were also ok. 13 was bad/harsh, 1 and 2 were both a bit harsh and thin. 7 had too much string noise (guitar too close to the mic?). The laptop mic could be the cause of the harshness when there are a lot of high frequencies. Last edited by black_box : 03-17-2013 at 11:31 PM. |

Clips 2, 6, 9, 10, 14, 15, and 17 sounded good. The rest either seemed too muddy or had a weird high overtone. I've gotta say though, this thread is a pretty great idea.

+1, big reason why I answered seriously in the first place. It's a good idea, but yeah, could have been executed better.
