That failure to instill decency, values and courtesy in one's children will likely result in them getting their ass kicked at some point in time due to a lack of said virtues.

Now granted, that doesn't necessarily require spanking, nor does spanking guarantee a harmonious outcome (since it's merely another tool in the parenting toolkit) but anecdotal evidence tells me that kids who were not spanked often grow up to be shitheads at a greater rate than otherwise, leading to the abovementioned conclusion.

Yeah...that's pretty much bullshit. Logic in children is much different than mature logic, being emotionally driven by immediate belief in their own ideas, the inability to consistently separate fact from belief and the use of momentary perceptions as absolutes.

These are the things that we show them how to overcome when we teach them 'logic' but it's neither an instant path nor a sure one. Spanking is occasionally a useful tool to overcome unreasonable obstinance occasioned by the 'childish logic' drivers above.
