My parents took the approach of only spanking when we were too young to understand what they were trying to discuss, which only is a brief initial period of life. Later getting lectured for sometimes a hour plus about what we did wrong was far more punishing than the spanking. At least with the spanking you'd be done in a minute and back to playing about.

If they're at the age where they can comprehend your arguments then spanking is pretty silly.

I personally feel that talking with children helps their reasoning and logic skills, also encouraging them to be open-minded as spanking pretty much says 'don't do that, just because I said so' and you never get the 'why'. Though I don't know if there is any evidence backing that opinion.

Children are able to learn to feel remorse for their actions just as well by talking to them as they are by being spanked. As I said before, spanking is a cop-out.
