I think the brain always tries to remind you to avoid death, first and foremost. Try picturing yourself standing near a ledge of any kind. Within a few seconds your imagined self will usually jump/fall over. Many dreams involve failure at work/school/relationships even if things are fine in reality, because they're so closely linked to security and food (avoiding death). It probably wants you to jump to the most dramatic conclusion about events/people, because until humans that was the optimal strategy for avoiding danger.
The point of your dream was probably, "Here is a potential death scenario. Don't do this! Don't! Don't! Don't! Don't! Find food! Avoid death now! When you wake up, remember to avoid death, avoid death... foodsexfoodsexfood... more bread, steak, less fruit, right now... avoid death avoid death avoid death SPREAD GENES EVERYWHERE avoid death", et cetera. Most of your brain wants to be a jolly king in a bathtub in a castle, surrounded by a moat, surrounded by an electric fence. Or not, no idea what your dream means.
