Eh, fair enough. I've watched a fair amount on Netflix. I keep intending to buy more season DVDs and running out of cash before I can. Anyway, SG-1 did get somewhat formulaic at first and picked up after that. It's sort of like the writers said, "Hey, let's make multiple episode story arcs with the over-arching arc of humanity vs. the Gould." So, season 4 is definitely when they realized they need to stop with the whole trope of saving the universe by going back into the Stargate. Or at least, "the saving" is not done until after they tie up several other interesting ends.

SG-1 being as great as it was from seasons 1-7 made me really skeptical about Atlantis for the longest time. It doesn't start too great (Atlantis) but picks up in the 2-3 seasons and becomes a really great show. It should have gone a lot longer than it did, especially when you compare the quality of Altantis' latter episodes with SG-1's. Universe wasn't too bad but there was definitely room for improvement.

Anybody who actually cares remotely about the events that transpire in the respective series would say Star Trek.

They are two completely different things, you can't even compare them.
One is a fantasy story set in the past (and far away), one is science fiction set in the future. They have nothing in common.

I like it more the more that I watch it, but it could never be equal to TNG to me. For one, I think TNG had stronger acting. There are good actors in DS9, but right now Sisko seems really bland to me. I'm aware that he changes, and I'm still waiting on that.

The problem with Universe is that half of the conflict involved Commander Scott and Rush. It got boring after awhile. By the 3rd time that Scott beat the shit out of Rush, they finally seemed to stop fighting like kids; but still the story was very driven by Scott and Rush having differing opinions. Chloe becoming a quasi-alien was cool though... Quote:
You mean, except for the fact that they both involve spaceships, viewer contact with different belief systems ("the Force" for Star Wars, the various beliefs of the "Alien races" for Star Trek), and very much designed to be epics? Well, then in that case, nothing in common whatsoever.

Like I said, fantasy and sci-fi completely are different genres. The fact they both feature spaceships etc doesn't matter, you might as well try comparing Lord Of The Rings to X-Men. Doesn't stop them all being good though - I have a pretty large DVD collection including all of Star Trek, Star Wars (although I haven't got around to buying series 4 of the Clone Wars yet) and Stargate, as well as Farscape, Babylon 5, 4400, Firefly and all the X-Men & LOTR movies.

Except for LotR, all of those have elements of both science fiction and fantasy to them. Science fiction, really, is just a form of fantasy having spaceships and other technological marvels anyway. So, yes, you can compare them. Whether you should or not, that's another thing. |
