strumming and muting

|-------------------------------------|
|-9--------10-------9--------6--------|
|-------------------------------------|
|-------------------------------------|
|-7--------9--------7--------4--------|
|-------------------------------------|

tabs like that i don't know how to play, unless i just pick the bottom with my thumb and the top with my pointer.

i listened to an interview and the guy was saying he would strum all the strings in a scenario like the one i posted above, by muting all the chords he doesnt want to hear and only pressing down the ones he wants to hear. how can i do that?

thanks

Fret the 7 with your index finger and the 9 with the ring finger.

Make sure that the index finger mutes all the other strings. So you can strum away.

to add to that, sometimes your index finger might be on top of a natural harmonic, so you might need to put an extra finger on to really deaden the strings.

@ComradSputnik has a good point. Though depending how technical you are when it comes to sound, Sputniks approach would have you playing nonchords and a chord that is not normally used.

As for my understanding, these would be the ideal chords:

|-------------------------------------|
|-9--------10-------9--------6--------|B
|-9--------11-------9--------6---------|G
|-9--------11-------9--------6----------|D
|-7--------9--------7--------4--------|A
|-------------------------------------|

Emaj F#m Emaj C#maj (Chords)

So in this example the A and B strings would be strummed, while you would mute the D & G strings. Of course they could be different chords but what is important to play is those two strings, and mute everything else.

|-------------------------------------|
|-9--------10-------9--------6--------|B
|-------------------------------------|G
|-------------------------------------|D
|-7--------9--------7--------4--------|A
|-------------------------------------|

I think thats how that guy was playing but I dont know. But more importantly just mute the rest of the strings u dont want and hold down the strings that u want to hear like Sputnik mentioned
