New Laptop?

I'm probably going to get a new laptop soon. My current laptop, a Compaq Prescario CQ60, is fairly good, although it is four years old, the battery life sucks in it, and some pieces are starting to fall apart on it. So lately I've been looking at laptops online, and I realized: I know nothing about computers, or what I need in a laptop. So I was hoping for some help on telling me what I will need in a laptop, and any recommendations.

I mostly use a laptop for school work, (I am a high school senior, and going to college next year), random internet surfing, keeping my 80GB collection of music, keeping all my guitar tabs for songs I've written saved, and I've been considering getting into some music production lately (a friend of mine uses ProTools and guitar emulators for a hardcore project he's been working on, he's gotten me interested in doing it).

So, does anyone have any suggestions? Also, size and weight are not that big of a factor for me, as long as it doesn't weigh a ton or is awkwardly small.

it is cute that you think that 80gb of music is big enough that it is worth mentioning

only thing i can think of is to just make sure you get a quad core cpu, and even that's not absolutely critical if you're really trying to save money. your requirements sound quite modest. dunno about protools, but i've used FL Studio successfully on a $600 laptop which is now about 3-4 years old.

A cheaper end Asus around 600 bucks or a MacBook Air.

You can find something with an i7 in that price range. If you need to, get something with an i7 and 4GB of RAM, then upgrade the RAM later.

I do hope you're buying a laptop with enough processing power to actually do music recording, if you're getting into that...

It's definitely absolutely hideous. Usually ASUS has better aesthetics than that. Also seems a bit overpriced.

It's not even so much the aesthetics as all these other little design issues. And also they stuck W8 on there and you can't do anything about it. That rustled my jimmies quite a bit.

Believe me, I tried. They stuck an unchangeable SecureBoot UEFI on there that prevents other OS installations from booting properly.

At my work, we sell a Toshiba with the same processor, 8 GB of RAM, and a 750 GB Hard Drive for $650.

Hmm I was always under the impression SecureBoot allowed other versions of windows with no issues, that was what I read in the angry statement from Linux foundation bor w.e

I think in general it's supposed to but this one in particular they really locked it down. I disabled SecureBoot and everything.
